I never knew for sure if they really believed what they played. I went to some of their concerts and they used to pray to Satan before the show. Still, I didn't buy it. It seemed like they were just artists. I was detached from it but still it was like a train wreck that I couldn't look away from. I think it's good art regardless of whether or not they believed it. If you listen to the lyrics of angel of death, it sure doesn't seem like they were on the side of Dr. Menegle but more like they understood the Nazi's loyalty, sense of awe at the SS like they were rock stars, and general angst for a better humanity via eugenics however sick that is.
Looking at all the people moshing to it is like watching a social experiment in hatred. That is what appears like art for me more than anything. Being at their concerts were the same. I just sat back and watched people. Nobody seemed to be connecting. It was like a drunken club scene. The people in the pits were the only ones who seemed to be having a good time. I never understood why though. Anything that interests me seems like art. Maybe they are just some stupid metal band but the fact that people got so into it is very interesting.
