Here in the Philadelphia area we have a radio station that does an annual countdown based on listener submissions. They just announced this year’s theme is the 10 songs you’d want on a CD if you were stranded on a desert island.

885 Desert Island Songs

I set out to do a “quick and dirty" list of must haves, and still ended up tearing my hair out… Arrggggghhh! So difficult! I finally had to take it a step further to get down to 10 by asking myself, if I knew I was going to die in an hour and I could listen to 10 songs, what would they be? This is what I came up with. If you’re up to the challenge, post your list here!

Blitzen Trapper - Furr
Cat Empire - Lonely Moon
Cat Empire - No Mountain
Cat Empire - The Chariot
Grateful Dead - Touch of Grey
INXS - New Sensation
Replacements - Can’t Hardly Wait
The Slip - Children of December
The Slip – The Original Blue Air/Paper Birds
U2 - Desire

I'd first buy a CD player, and some electronic equipment, otherwise I'd be stuck with a plain disc. 8O

Then I'd put the following 10 tracks on 1 CD.

In this order:

01. Blue Monday - New Order
02. Timeless - Goldie
03. Voodoo Chile - The Jimi Hendrix Experience
04. Giving Up The Ghost - DJ Shadow
05. The Way I Am - Eminem
06. Angel Of Death - Slayer
07. Paranoid Android - Radiohead
08. Hallejuah - Jeff Buckley
09. Working Class Hero - John Lennon
10. Tha - Aphex Twin

I'm not sure if they'll all fit on an 80 minute disc. lol.

I worked out that if I was to put those 10 tracks uncut onto 1 disc it would be this long:

86 minutes, 51 seconds.

I used iTunes Playlist to work it out.

Ooh! I was just listening to Desert Island Discs on Radio 4 the other morning, for the first time in years, and I started thinking about this. (They only let you have eight, though.)

My ten would be:

Come As You Are - Nirvana
Norwegian Wood - The Beatles
1,000,000 Kisses - Half Japanese
Giga Dance - Deerhoof
Sparky's Dream - Teenage Fanclub
Miss World - Hole
Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream - Sonic Youth
Peaches - Presidents of the USA
Light Rail Coyote - Sleater-Kinney
Daysleeper - REM

These lists are all so diverse, love it! 8) And it's Hallelujah in the lead among the WP community, looks like.

I've been thinking about how "desert island" can be open to some interpretation. Does it mean your all-time favorites? Does it mean, what would you want to hear before you die? Or maybe, you're in the perfect setting and you want music to relax to? These could all be very different lists, although for me, I kind of considered all three.

Yeah, it could be interpreted in many different ways. For example, I like a lot of sad songs, but if I was trapped in isolation it would be more constructive to listen to happy songs, since music is all you'd have that connects you to the rest of humanity. It depends if you are with other people or alone or in good health or dying.
