Does anyone consider himself/herself a writer? I am an Aspie, and write short stories every so often. I also contribute to a newsletter for a trade association in Washington, DC, where I currently live. It gives me an opportunity to practice my writing skills.

I write, always did. Also these days I freelance at Guru and at eLance. It's not art, but it makes a bit of walking around money. And I volunteer writing through VolunteerMatch - it really improves my self-esteem to be needed.

I'm reading Stephen King's book about writing. I just finished the part where he gives you the bare bones of an idea and tells you to reverse protagonist & antagonist - he says write it now, that's how he writes, it becomes a book - although he's only challenging the reader to 5 pages. But I'm terrified - what if it became a book? He might be right! Then I would be enslaved to my keyboard - it's happened before but not for the length of a novel - egad, what to do, what to do?

I write... not professionally. I write for the same reasons I draw or paint... it all comes from the need to hit my inner reset button. I do it on automatic. If the mood hits me, I can lose five hours and have some short story in front of me or find myself staring at a giant gas mask I drew. If I have to think about it, it never works. I like to write. I feel better when I am done, like I just washed a bunch of black slime off of myself. It is like therapy for me.

I guess I am to a writer what a doodler is to an artist. :P

Every now and then I feel the urge to write a poem or two, and I'm usually told they're pretty good, but I don't think I write them enough or with enough skill to call myself a poet.

Same with stories--sometims I just write a few lines of description or interaction or dialogue, but never actually adding a plot and making it into something.

I'm glad to see this response. I am still a college student, and thought I was interested in economics. Then I realized I have skills writing, and enjoy doing it. My dream is to write fiction and make enough money to live on, but that wouldn't allow me to practice the craft of writing itself. Perhaps writing may lead to journalism. Or law.

I'm in the process of writing a screenplay. Here's some info on it:
