“Second place is first loser.” Is winning really everything?

Winning is not really everything. Although winning is a large part of the wishes that we want, I contend that winning is not all we want when we compete with others to strive for our goals. I think besides winning, there are a host of other ideas like objectives, respect and sustainability that come along with winning. Hence being second in a field does not necessary imply that anyone or any organization is a loser. On the contrary, second placings are not just the first in a pool of 'losers', they can actually be good in their own right.

Two major car rental companies, Hertz and Avis.

The tagline of Hertz "We're number One!"

The tagline of Avis "We Try Harder!"

They were (are) both successful companies. Notwithstanding the tongue-in-cheek tagline of Avis - I don't think that they ever considered themselves "first loser" in the car rental business.

Avis ain't a loser, Avis just needs to beat itself given its best opportunities.
