Every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
Then I get affraid what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
Figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now.

I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets
Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets
I've been raising up my hands
Drive another nail in
Just what GOD needs
One more victim

Why do we crucify ourselves
Every day I crucify myself
Nothing I do is good enough for you
Crucify myself
Every day I crucify myself
And my HEART is sick of being in chains

Got a kick for a dog beggin' for LOVE
I gotta have my suffering
So that I can have my cross
I know a cat named Easter
He says will you ever learn
You're just an empty cage girl if you kill the brid

I've been looking for a savior in these dirty streets
Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets
I've been raising up my hands
Drive another nail in
Got enough GUILT to start
My own religion

Why do we crucify ourselves
Every day I crucify myself
Nothing I do is good enough for you
Crucify myself
Every day I crucify myself
And my HEART is sick of being in chains

Please be
Save me
I CRY

Looking for a savior in these dirty streets
Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets
I've been raising up my hands
Drive another nail in
Where are those angels
When you need them

Why do we crucify ourselves
Every day I crucify myself
Nothing I do is good enough for you
Crucify myself
Every day I crucify myself
And my HEART is sick of being in chains

Why do we change (chains?)
Crucify ourselves
Everyday

Never going back again
Crucify myself again
You know
Never going back again to
Crucify myself
Everyday

Tori Amos lyrics - "Crucify"

What do you guys think this song means?

One of my favorite songs. Seems to me the meaning is as explicit as it could possibly be.

maybe ask tori online? she might tell you.

to me, it seems to be about how people beat themselves up over nothing. the "saviour complex," thinking (a) they should be saving everyone somehow, (b) they're not, so (c) they need to get all dramatic about it and castigate themselves....

but i don't think it's quite as clear as the person above me thinks (or to me it's not, anyway). i'm fairly sure tori had a particular person in mind while writing it. that's just my guess, but i have a somewhat good track record with guesses on artistic creations (i've been able to check with the artists occasionally).

she's probably also writing about herself. as an artist and a person who's been around a lot of things in my life, i've seen that artists are almost always referring--at some level--to personal experience.

after all, it's one's feelings and perceptions that trigger the desire to express those to others, right?

one more thing: like most art, there are probably many layers of meaning to it, and what it says to *you* is 100% one of those layers. whether or not the artist intentionally meant it that way.

that's what makes some art "great" (vs just ok or interesting): that it reaches into each one who experiences it and pulls out a personal, significant reaction to it.

I think this analysis would also account for the longevity of certain artists, musicians in particular, Bob Dylan comes to mind, and distinguishes them from flashes in the pan.

Here is what I believe to be the best version of Tori singing "Crucify" on the Sharon Osbourne show.
