First of all, I'm very anti-racist. I've never judged a person by the color of their skin, only their character.

But here's my question, I love many many songs from many many genres. One genre includes the old south. I've always been a fan of rebel songs, not because I'm a southern sympathizer, I just like their music.

None of these songs mentions anything about race but I've gotten in a few tifs with people because of what the rebel songs as well as flags represent. FYI, the songs I like, mention nothing about race or slavery. But I know some people view the rebel music as something close to racism.

What are your thoughts?

Do you think it's wrong to like these kinds of songs?

If listening to that music makes you a racist, then:

My enjoyment of bands from Israel makes me Jewish
My enjoyment of christian bands makes me a christian
My enjoyment of atheistic bands makes me an atheist
My enjoyment of satanic bands makes me a satanist

and so on and so forth.

I'm not all of these things, or any of the other things the musicians that I enjoy are into. Well some things, but not most. I'm me, and I love music.

I don't think so. There's a difference between listening to sth only for listening and listening because of ideology. If you only listen and you don't support the artists, it's nothing wrong. But some people can't understand this.

Look to my thread about TotalitArt. Some people think if I like propaganda-posters, I like their ideology. But I like only their graphic side. Graphic is only graphic, ideology is in people. I don't care about people and their minds.

I personally feel the same way.

I guess I could sort of understand why some people would be upset but there's a lot of music I've found personally insulting, but I try not to let it get to me.

Many people can't take sth to pieces, they see only seems wrong -> it is wrong -> you're wrong.

I see what people think about Laibach and I think you are really stupid or you only pretend?

I like the art (propaganda pictures) linked to totalitarism and listening Soviet and German military marchs. Does it make me become a kind of Stalinian Kraut ?
As say Valoyossa and OccamsIndecision, I think that liking something from an aesthetic or musical point of view is something, liking something because you share its ideology is another.

If you simply like the style of music, then I don't see why you would be considered racist.

These two quotes work perfectly well with my attitude towards types of music based on their idealogy.

There's still hardcore Christians that will say you'll go to Hell for listening to The Beatles of all bands. I'm religious, but I find most Christian music to be watered down, even their rock bands (Third Day is an exception, they're kick*ss, even their softer songs are neat).

I listen to whatever the hell I want, just like I said in the "I gave up death metal..." thread, I just don't "mean what I hear." I can even enjoy some psychotic lyrics for the reason that they are really blunt and by listening to them I can almost feel as if I'm letting some anger or frustration out (like using a punching bag), but if a lyric goes "I wanna slit your throat and f*** the wound..." doesn't mean that I think it's a good idea, regardless of being religious or not.

Btw, I like that rebel music, it's extremely catchy.

You like what you like. I like one song by Skrewdriver and I'm militantly anti-fascist. I'm also into the totalitarian aesthetic because it fascinates me on a mental level... yet I continue to fight against fascists every day.

You're only racist if you hate someone because of their skin color.

My friend listens to cattle decapitation, and he's a christian.

Just to give you an idea, alot of their lyrics are very, very anti god, demonic, whatever.

Maybe you should make a thread for your racist friends at zOMG, personally I don't think music
makes you raciest, could be the company some people keep, but thats only my opinion
