I used to have trouble with these awards shows about who is "better" in a certain category than the other nominees. I eventually got my own opinion about it, I wanna know your opinion though.

What does it mean to get a Grammy? Is that artist or group better than the other nominees? How do they compare to past artists and groups as they get more Grammys?

Those awards shows have zero to do with talent, or even quality of performance, although the participants often snobbishly pretend that they do. They're popularity contests within a specific cliquish peer group. The Oscars are about appearances, not performances.

The Grammys are about rewarding sales, because the Recording Industry does not give two hoots in Hell about talent or aesthetic values, much less shooting for ever higher creative and intellectual milestones - they're all about the Benjamins, Baby, and that is all they care about. Smart product only attracts a small audience of the intelligent and perceptive minority - so they reward their performers to dumb it down as far as possible, to reach the widest audience of morons you can get. It's called 'seeking the lowest common denominator'. So in reality, you can usually figure the Grammys are going to the least talented people (or the biggest sellout whores) in the Industry who managed to sell the most product that year, or show the most promise for compromising their artistic vision and selling their souls next year.

But that's all I know, I don't really have an opinion.
