I was thinking about what the gloomiest 60s songs are.

Anything with Nico singing on it wins by default...but there's still 'Johnny Remember Me' and 'Tell Laura I Love Her'. There's all that Shangri-Las stuff.

There's 'Did You See His Name?' by The Kinks.

I know it doesn't sound gloomy, but read the lyrics:

8O

What gloomy old tunes do you suggest?

You never need an excuse to post Scott Walker in my threads!

Also that Lee Hazlewood song was genius! You win this thread! I will go to bed happy and sad at the same time now! 8)

Glad you think so. That song, I agree, is genius.

I will try to think of more, but my memory doesn't work this way very well, I need to wait for them to pop up.

Oh here's a proper good one:

I like that too! Never heard it before.

lolololololol

He sounds like tone-deaf Jonathan Richman. I'm not sure what year it came out. It might be pre-60s.

This song makes me :D :D :D :D 'We've always been happy and gay...'

Much better than the last couple of things I posted.

I love Bacharach.

The Shirelles - Baby It's You

(I can't find any good videos, but you know what it sounds like).

One of my friends showed me this a few months ago:

Brothers Four - Greenfields

Interestingly enough, there was also a famous Russian song built off the same melody in the 80s (I think). Unfortunately, most of the people here won't be able to understand the lyrics (and thus fully appreciate how beautiful it really is), but if anyone wants to listen to it, here it is:

Эдита Пьеха - Город детства

I find it incredibly amusing how, until very recently, Russian music was pretty similar to Western pop music from 20+ years prior.

Oh, and it's not in English, but it's from the 60s and I consider it somewhat gloomy sounding, so...

I'd say "The Last Hooray", by Wimple Winch. Unfortunately that is very rare, so I have no link.
Here's some of the lyrics:

I'm trying my best to act like a grown up, but I know I'll make a fool of myself
I'm doing the best that I can
Baby I'm just a man
I wish I was somebody else
