I have this piano student. He has AS, and he figures out hymns by ear and plays them over and over in his lesson when I'm writing stuff down for him. This is the latest one that he's been playing http://www.mediafire.com/?dltfkgwacjn. He can't remember what it's called, and it's driving me insane to have it stuck in my head and not know what it is. (It's transcribed as he plays it, so any errors are his fault, not mine. His tempo is more flexible, but I was too lazy to go and put tempo indications all over the place in my notation software.).

*edit* the tempo should be faster, too; I didn't change that properly. I really should be able to use my notation software...
Can anyone identify it?

"Guide me O thou great Redeemer"

Here are the lyrics.

There are a few mistakes in the transcription, but that's still pretty impressive.

sorry, i couldn't figure it out either. have you tried calling 'round to other churches, perhaps playing it to an organist and asking him/her if they had played it before.
good luck.

I knew the hymn the moment I heard your tune, but the melody is a amalgam of the hymn Orwell mentioned and the ALTO part of "Angels from the Realms of Glory" (evidenced in the series of same notes before the swing to the second part of the bridge)

http://www.hymnsite.com/hymndex.htm at the bottom of the page is a midi file with the tune.

It's very similar to one of my favourite hymns, so I'll agree with Orwell, though the arrangement is slightly different from what I'm used to.

He's a very talented little boy; he worked out how to play the organ by ear before he had any music lessons at all.

later edit:

oh, I just clicked on the above link and find it just puts up a random hymn, not the midi for the hymn in question. Sorry! I didn't know.

I think its awesome you have a student who can do that. I have two older (high school age) students and a 9-year-old that are remarkably good piano players considering their years of experience and in spite me being their teacher! One of the older ones I inherited from another, much better teacher, and I want to keep her working hard, learning good literature, and also learning things about playing the instrument that are more fun than what many of us traditionalists are used to. These three in particular are almost ready to start learning to play by ear and improvising, which is something I'm determined to teach in my studio as students get older and can handle the instrument well enough to learn independently.

Glad to hear you've got one of the better ones. I'm so jealous!! !

How long have you been playing piano and teaching it?

I treated myself to a "movie on demand" on cable (the venerable t The African Queen ) with Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart and right there in the opening credits the jungle sounds morph into Guide me O thou great Redeemer! played with gusto by Katherine Hepburn's character with that triumphant repetition of the middle section. I was astonished, Who_Am_I because it sounded exactly like the midi file you posted!

I looked on youtube to find the opening credits so you could hear the hymn but something about it being private property keeps it from being posted there. I just thought you migh like to know.

I've been playing piano for 15 years, teaching it for 6.
