Would you read this?
I'm thinking about writing a cyberpunk, futeristic scifi fantasy story about a girl with autism trying to escape people who want to "cure" her. The story takes place in the next century and scientists have discovred the gene that causes autism. All pregnent women have to have their fetuses tested for autism and other conditions. If the fetus tests positive, it is aborted weither the parents want to or not. The story takes place in America but "freedom" is just an idea and no one really has any rights anymore. The girl was born before the genetic test for autism was developed and she's one of the last of her kind. There are "treatments" for autistic teens and adults ranging from gene therapy to brain surgery. The government will take children away if there parents do not make them have the treaments and will give it to the children anyway. The treatments don't really work and do more harm than good but the government doesn't want people to know that. The girl is an orphan. Her aspie, parents were killed in a protest when she was fifteen. The girl not only has autism but also special traits such as the ablity to talk to animals. The government is aware of her gift and wants to strip that from her as well because they can. They claim she is skitsofrenic. She was basicaly adopted by a motherly puma. Anyway, would you read a story like this and could you give me some ideas?

neet! Id read it. you might want to look into the new age idea of indigo and crystal children. might be some good inspiration there for your story. IMHO its all complete crap..but It might work. alot of people believe this stuff, and it would apeal to a more metaphsical audience. http://www.amagicalworld.com/indigo_crystal.php
http://www.neurodiversity.com/indigo.html. Also get ahold of a book by Orson Scott Card. Children of the mind. and read about the Godspoken.
hope that helps with the inspiration.
Apparently I would read this post. And respond to it. I think that many autistics would be able to relate to someone whose freedom and civil rights are taken away in the name of treatment. In this case, abortion is 'the treatment.' You might have something, depending upon what you write.

I've heard about idigo or crystal kids and wonder if I could be one. I was born in 87 so I guess not. I always found it nothing more than New Age mumbo jumbo but it's intresting. The theroy is explored in my story but thanks anyway.

They also have gene therapy and brain surgery forced upon them in the story. HF or LF, it dosen't matter. Kanner's or Asperger's if you have a diagnosis, you must have the treatment. America is a dictatorship 100 years into the future.

I would read it.
Maybe it would start subtly with ADHD, requiring all kids with the diagnosis to be on meds or they're not allowed into a mainstream classroom. "Too much trouble" for the teachers or somesuch. And God forbid a parent or a child refuse to take meds!
Now, some kids IRL DO need meds, and some adults. But if someone ever tried to cram a pill down MY throat, I would not go down without a nasty, knock-down drag-out fight. I would be worse than when you try to get a cat to take a pill. It would be UGLY.
I suggest ADHD as an "opening" (a starting legal precedent) not just because I have it, but because some still argue against its very existence or the legitimacy of accommodating "bad-behaved" kids who have it without drugging them.
Then, if the general population got used to THAT, that could be the gateway to worse.
