I listen to a lot of music, but apart from Classical Metal is my preferred genre. My preferred bands are Megadeth, Metallica, Devildriver, Mastodon, Slayer, Pantera, Arch Enemy, Opeth and Tool (I dunno if Nine Inch Nails and Marliyn Manson would be considered metal although). A lot of people say that the more extreme Black and Death Metal is quite depressing, from my point of view I disagree listening to such music is depressing, infact quite the opposite it makes me happy.

Do any of you get the same effect listening to similar sort of music?

Yeah, not metal, though, but dark industrial and a bit of goth makes me happy.
Angry music feels good to listen to when you're angry. It aknowledges you.
On the other hand, I get happy from happy J-pop on speed as well. ;)

You just named some of my favorite bands: Devildriver, Mastodon, and Tool. NIN and Manson make a kind of music that developed from metal, but it is not metal. I'm not sure what it's called but it is basically pop-goth rock.

I know what you mean. I don't find this kind of music depressing at all. I find that it has strong enough emotionality to get an excitement response from me, unlike most other music. I respond to the energy and I get excited. It makes me want to drive faster, lift heavier, and punch harder.

Opeth is one of the best progressive death metal bands around. ArchEnemy is also another truly talented death metal band, and with the new female singer, they're even more awesome than before.

It's not depressing for me. I like the atmosphere. I like the energy. It excites me. It stimulates me.

I listen to heavy underground music as well as obtruse and dark ambient music. I'm not that much into soft rock at all, though I'll listen to it around others if it makes them happy.

Tool's new album is okay. I like their older stuff better. There's a couple of short chant-like tracks on the new Tool album that seem to be quite good, but overall the vocal style doesn't seem to be as hypnotizing as it did on their previous works. Nine Inch Nails used to be good, but they've got way too commercial in sound. Tool seems to be going that approach.

If there was any major "nu-metal" or mainstream metal band I'd get into, maybe Queensryche and prog bands like that, say Iron Maiden ... But I also like Korn and System of a Down.

I don't find any of that depressing, per say--I like depressing music. And I think that some of the instrumental choices are very interesting. That said, I can't stand most Death Metal because I can't stand the singing style. Props go to a lot of these groups for having cool names, though--like "Cradle of Filth" or "Satyricon" or "Nephilim." Cool names. Not music I like, but cool names.

Yes! Actually I find the "happy" style music makes me upset and the heavy/dark stuff picks me up. Especially when you blast your ears out with it.. :P Marilyn Manson and Slayer have got to be the best at cheering me up, Opeth is just relaxing and the rest is just a general better feeling.

I love Arch Enemy and Mastodon too!
A song like Arch Enemy's "We will rise" is all about being an induvidial and daring to be different to me.
