Some songs just seem to encapsulate what it means to be on the autism spectrum. For me, here are two:

I Didn't Understand - Elliott Smith

Things the Grandchildren Should Know - the Eels

What are yours?

'In the garage I feel safe
No one cares about my ways
In the garage where I belong
No-one hears me sing this song'

The Smiths: "How Soon Is Now". The ultimate aspie anthem.

I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth, how can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

Theres a club you would like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry and you want to die

To lesser extend, The Smiths song "There is a light that never goes out" is also somewhat Aspie related. It is about not fitting in anywhere and wanting to escape forever from a home which never felt like home.

Also an aspie song is Charlotte Sometimes, by the Cure.

Sometimes I am dreaming while all the other people dance
...
Charlotte sometimes dreams a wall around herself

When I listened to the Smiths back in high school, that line always got to me. It showed me that someone understood.

My therapist who diagnosed me properly and I were often wondering if Morrissey has a form of autism (likely aspergers) as well. Of course we cannot just say that without him confirming it, but it would not really surprise me.

It is odd. Echo & The Bunnymen and The Smiths are my favourite bands ever. Ian McCulloch of the Bunnymen suffers from OCD just like me. And maybe (?) Morrissey shares AS with me. I found it odd to find out Ian McCulloch had OCD as well (I only found out about it long after becoming a Bunnymen fan) but if both of my musical heroes would share a disorder or condition with me, that would be extremely odd especially when knowing I became a fan before finding out they had these issues in common with me.

I understand what you mean. Sometimes I think that the aspie in me (even before I knew what autism spectrum was) was searching for kindred spirits in music, art, literature, or whatever. It would not surprise me if many of those that I admired were also of the same "breed" as me--like recognizes like

Truly, only someone on the spectrum (whether aware or not) could reach out to someone else on the spectrum so fervently. They may have NT fans, but those fans appreciate it on a different level :chin: If a spectrumite witnesses an honest expression of creativity from another spectrumite, there's an entanglement of consciousness that recognizes a connection. I don't think NTs share this connection with someone on the spectrum just like how someone on the spectrum may not share an intense connection with an NT's expression of creativity.

Creativity is wonderful, whether by an NT or someone on the spectrum. But some people on the spectrum have a "radar" for each other and this radar can seek out kindred spirits or role models. Of course, this radar is not scientific in any way and is basically psychological and emotional, but it serves a meaningful purpose.

Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely

That there
That's not me
I go
Where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey
I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here
I'm not here

In a little while
I'll be gone
The moment's already passed
Yeah it's gone
And I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here
I'm not here

Strobe lights and blown speakers
Fireworks and hurricanes
I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here
I'm not here

---------------------------------------------------

I sort of interpret it as wanting to escape from all the tiring commotion and constant anxiety that is life. The thought of floating and observing life from a distance without having to engage anyone sometimes appeals to me. Whenever I walk around in a crowded place I see everyone but me is caught up in the moment. I am distant and detached, kind of like floating over the crowd.

I think one really good aspie song is Weezer's "pork and beans" song.

Some of the lyrics are:

"I'm gonna do the things that I wanna do,

I ain't got a thing to prove to you,

I eat my candy with the pork and beans,

Excuse my manners if I make a scene,

I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like,

I'm fine and dandy with the me inside,

One look in the mirror and I'm tickled pink,

I don't give a hoot about what you think."

Another aspie song that I think is really good is the "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" song with the lyrics of "I walk alone, I walk alone."

"All Along The Watchtower." Jimi Hendrix.
"Don't Give Up." Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush.

There's gotta be some kinda way out o' here
said the Joker to the Thief
There's too much confusion
And I can't get no release.
