I have this problem where I just keep rereading Lord of the Rings and other Tolkien books, Harry Potter, and also the Mark Twain books. Are there any books that I might like that have a depth, presence and are simple like the books already mentioned? Just desperately looking for some new material.

Well, I would certainly recommend Dune by Frank Herbert. And if you like Harry Potter, you might like Artemis Fowl. Try some of the Discworld novels as well.

The Hyperion Series by Dan Simmons. The 4th book gets pretty deep.

I don't read much fantasy anymore, but I think you might like;

Patrick Suskind's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.

The books of Scott Lynch might be your thing. I read The Lies of Locke Lamora a while back, and I thought it was really entertaining.

Could try The Black Company By Glen Cook. Especially the first book. There's ten books in the series and I read them all(!), but I recommend you drop out when they get wearing.

The Alchemist, by Paulo Coehlo. Not to everyone's taste.

Watership Down?

Bram Stoker's Dracula?

How about Carlos Castaneda, you might dig his work.

If you like sci fi and you've not read Ender's Game, then do yourself a favour. I bet you'd dig it.

+1

Also recommend Dune, like someone else did. Some of the books in the series are better than others, but nothing is quite like the first one.

I've been reading Kate Elliott's Crown of Stars series, and I haven't yet made up my mind about it. Alternate historical fiction with a smidge of fantasy.

I liked the first couple of Hyperion books, don't think I made it to the finale.

The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov might float your boat.

The first two only set up the background and mythology of the second two. They were a good story on their own, but you really should give the last two a shot.

I found Around in the World in 72 Days to be very informing and enjoyable, also bearing the message of respect for Victorian Era Women.

Catch-22 ticks all those boxes. Fantastic book, it is seriously underrated

If you like good stories in detailed worlds Harry Harrison's West of Eden is really great (but the science behind the story is a bit dated).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll go back through this list when I need a new book. Last night I found A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin which seems really immersive from the first chapter, so I'm going to plow through that.

I tried Dune some time ago but found it difficult going. Lots of strange words like gom jabba! What? Couldn't understand what was going on there. Some strange witch threatening to kill a guy with poison, kind of put me off.

Really? I thought it was generally considered to be a bone fide classic.
