And by set-up, I mean instrument/amplifier/effects loop. If you don't play an electric instrument, what would be your dream instrument model/type/whatever? Is it that high-end Yamaha bass sax? That old Dobro lap guitar? Tell meh!

Mine, which I am saving up for and working to get, is a Conklin GT-7 7-string bass guitar. I want high-end as well as low end. I'm kind of defeating my purpose as bassist, but I want the versatility of BEADGCF. John Entwistle would frown upon me. :P

As for my amp, I hope for a Hartke HyDrive 115c combo amp, as I try them out every time I go to the local instrument store. I just love the EQ you can dial in on the thing. The built in overdrive is a pleasant add-on as well.

For my effects loop, I really don't use effects as much as I feel I should, so I just want an all in one type thing. So I want a multieffects pedal. The Digitech BP200 is just such a unit for me. I haven't tried one out yet, but I'm confident I'll like it. I'm not looking for any thing super high tech.

This all comes to twenty-five hundred dollars. The next two years of saving should be fun. :P

5150 II half-stack with a white Peavey Wolfgang and an MXR EVH Phase 90 for some effects occasionally. I have a lot of dream setups though

Me too, if I had the money, I'd be getting custom ampeg stacks, but I wanna dream realistically so I don't think about it much. :D

4 - string tenor guitar.
double bass banjo
I would like a mandolin
a gitorgan
a thermin
a pedal with 5 minutes of reverb.

when electric I play a four string bass with its labels sanded off and strung with bailing wire thru an old church P.A.
from a church that was burnt down I did not steal it.
the high ferrous content of the strings makes them very sleazy sounding but they tend to blow amps.
it is some kinda dream

acoustic a honda banjo with a e string from an electric bass and a bridge made out of a chicken bone
played with a bow.
also a dream set-up of sorts

@JakobVirgil: If you could make that happen, I'd like to get some samples!

I'm working on my dream setup. Of sorts, anyway.

My main axe is a Synclavier PSMT, with 32 voice stereo FM, 32 voice stereo DDV sampling, 64 MB sampling memory, with sample-to-memory, 1X4 MIDI option, and 8 outs (rarely used, but nice to have).

Having the Synclavier with the MIDI option is really cool because then it becomes the nerve center for the rest of my gear. Akai S2000 sampler with 32MB sampling RAM and 32 voices. Not as cool as the Synclav, of course, but at least gives the option of digital filters. Also have a Yamaha TX7 (old-school Yamaha FM), a TX802 (2nd-gen TX7 with clearer sounds and some groovy presets), and a Roland alpha Juno1 for DCO analog sounds.

At the end of my MIDI chain is a Presonus Firepod, back before they started calling it the FP10. All my sources are plugged into a DBX patchbay, and from there I can go either straight to monitor or into Logic Pro 9, which is more often the case.

The question is obviously where to go from here. If I ever got a Roland V-Synth XT, I'd probably never buy another piece of synth hardware again. It's über cool because it has an exceptional vocal modeler and a miniaturized D50 card. I would also like to have either a Korg Mono/Poly or a Poly6. My aJuno is nice, but I really need that "fat" analog synth like one of the Jupiters. I'm really not picky about that. A Dave Smith Prophet, would be just fine--it wouldn't even have to be a vintage SCI version. And most certainly a Moog. I'm thinking seriously about getting at least the Slim Phatty because I have a better chance of affording one. But hey, if the sky's the limit, gimme a Voyager!

That would effectively round out what I really want/need at home.

But playing gigs is a different story. I'd definitely gig a Lil Phatty or a Voyager, even if I was using it in my studio. I have a DX7II that I gig with along with a Korg SP500. What I'd really rather do, though, is trade in my SP for a Korg SV-1 with 88 keys. And then I'd trade in my DX7 for a Korg X50.

I play guitar with my band SOMETIMES. I already use Mainstage 2 extensively with my live rig, which includes an Alesis Sumo300 amp (yep, 300 watts!! !). Since my guitar playing is limited, I don't mind the amp and prefer building my own "virtual" dream setups. My guitar is a MIM Telecaster with D'Addario ProSteels and some stacked Duncans. I also have a 60th Anniversary American Strat that I use for recording and nothing else. But I wouldn't complain if someone gave me Mesa rectifier and a couple of 4x12's!

Someone actually just GAVE me a Yamaha alto sax. If I had the money to spend, though, I'd go with a Selmer Mk6 Tenor Sax with a Eugene Rousseau mouthpiece for that "concert" sound. For playing with the band, I need to look at different metal mouthpieces and ligatures to get the tone I'm really going for. Nobody is really going to care if I'm out playing with a "student model" sax as long as it sounds good. The thing is I've been playing woodwinds a lot longer than keyboards, so my standards are pretty high.

My clarinet is a Leblanc Opus (1st gen) with a Pyne BN~ mouthpiece and a Bonade inverted ligature. The only thing I'd change about it is I'd replace all the rings and keywork with gold-plated keys and rings. Mine is the typical silver, and as it oxidizes it shows its age. I'd also think about replacing my barrel and bell with Backun. My clarinet is pitched in Bb, and I'd love to have a matching one in A.

And... Finally... I want a BBb Contrabass clarinet. Why? Because it's just BAD@ZZ!! !

it is manipulated but not pitch shifted

I'd love to have a Roland FR-7 V-Accordion, along with a brain that will let me play the harmony and melody at the same time. 8)

My dream setup is:

64,000 male grizzly bears, arranged in order of mass. Each grizzly is to be wearing a tinfoil diaper. The grizzlies are to encircle the audience entirely.

Each diaper is to be connected to a series of 3000 watt amplifiers modified with a frequency filter, output in each range to correlate to a size range of the bears.

A separate channel, activated by an FPGA programmed to flip an ON bit upon a specific series of notes, sends a signal to a 600 megaton thermonuclear device on the Sea of Tranquility.

Another channel, activated by a different sequence of notes, sends a signal directly into the pleasure center of each audience member (via implants inserted shortly before the show).

The guitar will of course be a '58 Gibson Les Paul.

I think this violates the Geneva Convention, as well as most UN resolutions.

But it would be a hell of a show.

I haven't kept track of gear since I was in high school, but I'll throw it out there.

I'd like a Breedlove retro dreadnought acoustic with one of those old school tweed Fender acoustic amps (no clue what those are called exactly)

I play electric so little these days that it would be ridiculous for me to even dream of a specific setup for that, I already have a nice Telecaster that I've had for like 12 years and I'm fine with plugging that straight into my 8-track if I want to record something.

I've been thinking/daydreaming about buying or building a xylophone. I was quite the virtuoso on the thing in grades 1-3 until I stopped being able to take music.

You should go with a marimba. Extended playing range, longer sustain on the bars, the potential for playing 4-mallet pieces, and much richer tonal characteristics. It's the granddaddy of bar percussion!
