I read Maximum Rock n Roll quite often. I remember reading it many, many years ago, around the late 1980s, long before I ever knew what AS was, because I was interested in some of the most obscure metal and punk bands in existence. I once remember reading the scene reports and came across the name of this band:

Kermit's Green Penis

That has got to be one of the most weirdest names I have ever come across. Many years later, like last year, I did some research on a few bands I remembered from way back in the day. I came across this site, with the name of this very band:

http://howardamb.com/earlyAMBbands.html

What do they sound like? I have no idea, though I understand it to be power noise or something. It's just strange. It's mesmerizing to think about what these bands might sound like. What kind of people were behind such bands? Like, there was a degree of utter intensity upon reading about such obscure bands back in the day. It got me interested in mail-order. I wanted to hear many more of these very unknown artists that nobody else seems to know about. The weirder they sounded, then the better.

These bands aren't so obscure but I think the names are a bit weird:

Death Cab for Cutie
Goldfrapp - apparently an inside joke word that means nothing
killing Heidi
People Under the Stairs - currently on the triplej hitlist

That's all I can think of right now.

Well, here's some more.

- No Fish on Tuesday
- Between the Buried and Me
- Naked Raygun (actually a take on President Reagan)
- Millions of Dead Cops (MDC, also goes by the name Millions of Dead Christians, among others)
- Meat s**ts

Some kinda weird names:

-Fluffy Starr
-Mogwai (does it mean something in Gaelic or something, I wonder?)
-Apoptygma Berzerk
-VNV Nation
-Atreyu (can't stand those guys)
-Hawthorne Heights (them neither)
-My Chemical Romance (OR them! Man, what is it with these crappy emo bands and their weird names?)
-De/Vision
-Hungry Lucy
-Ego Likeness
-Porcelain & the Tramps (okay, fine not weird, just unusual and funny-sounding, heh. Good but filthy music, CD isn't out yet though...)

Goldfrapp is called that because the singer is named Allison Goldfrapp.
I hate bands that are named after Star Wars, like Emperor, Red Leader, Nerf Herder, etc.

"Elbow through my Rothchild" - this was a Canberra based band, named after some woman fell over in the Art Gallery and damaged a painting.

"Machine Gun Felatio" also known as "MGF" - frequently in trouble for their on-stage antics which often involve nudity but rarely machine guns.

"Spank you very Much"

"This Is Serious Man" - aka TISM.

"Duran Duran" is a pretty weird name, especially as it is named after the villan in Barbarella and that was a weird movie. Just because the band did really well, doesn't mean the name isn't weird.

"Milli Vanilli" - but nothing was quite right about them

The weirdest band name I heard is Public Domain. It seems kind of ironic that they copyright their songs.

Here are ten more extremely weird band names:

(1) Circle of Dead Children
(2) Negligent Collateral Collapse
(3) The Number 12 Looks Like You (Now that is completely bizarre!)
(4) One Man Army and the Undead Quartet
(5) Rites of Thy Degringolade
(6) Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition
(7) Severed Head of State (Great band, and I really like the name!)
(8) Japanische Kampfhorspiele (Now, how do you pronounce that?)
(9) Terminally Your Aborted Ghost
(10) Subarachnoid Space

From the same mag in the Mid 80's I remember:

Snoopy's Tapeworm

They were from the Chicago Area.

Also, Before they settled on calling themselves the Butthole Surfers, that band that eventually took on that name would play gigs using a differant name every time they played, my favorites being The Ashtray Babyheads, and Vodka Family Winstons.
