This applies to any art! Musician, Writer, Visual Artist, I don't care what! What's genre do you like doing the most? And why?

For me as a musician, I love doing Ambient, Post-Rock, Folk, Minimalist and Jazz.

There's just something magical about them. Ambient is fun to create because at the end you get to hear how everything blends together. Post-Rock, in my opinion, is the freest form of expression in music. You can just let the emotion flow with it. Folk is just amazing, because you can tell a story with your music, not just with the lyrics but with the music. Minimalism is just beautiful. Whether it's a drone to various dotted whole notes, it gives you room to think. Jazz is just fun to do.

Your guys'/gals' turns!

It's been a while since I've played, but I was primarily a blues guitarist. I had the typical influences: SRV, BB King, Albert King, T-Bone Walker, Son Seals (OK...that last one probably wasn't too typical). My favorite thing to play was a good, slow jazz-blues; there's a lot of space to use (or not use). I was much better at improvising solos than playing rhythm guitar.

I don't do genres. There's something beautiful in all categories.

I cannot limit myself to one genre really........But I listen to a lot of Metal, Psychedelic Rock, Harsh EBM(i think this genre goes by other names as well), Hard Rock, Industrial Rock/Metal, various hybrid genres and there are bands from just about every genre I enjoy.

As a musician I play mostly folk, blues and (very basic) jazz music...the roots of American popular music today. I listen to almost every genre of music before the year 1990 or so. I also enjoy play music from musicals and such.

Folk is by far my favorite to play. What I like about folk music is you never have to play it the same way twice, you can't really make mistakes, you are allowed to change the rhythm a bit, or maybe expand upon the melody, add/remove/change lyrics, etc. I don't think there really is even the concept of doing a 'cover' of a song in folk... you can't because no one has ever heard the original.

Writing doesn't have a genre though I like reading a lot of drama and biographies.

You are my complete opposite, I think. The only thing missing is extreme and black metal. :D

In writing, I favor mysteries and "slice-of-life" stories in a Science-Fiction setting.

In music, I favor bluegrass and Celtic traditional.

For visual entertainment, I favor comedies.

I like to write fantasy and historical, but often I mix the two together (i.e. I write stories that use historical civilizations, but the characters, wars, and everything else are fictional).

I'm currently working on a solo industrial and electronic rock project, if actuality counts. I'm also writing a post-cyberpunk novel, as well. And working on a science-fantasy web series and another far-future sci-fi TV series.

I fancy myself a horror writer, though years ago a friend and I had collaborated on an action/adventure/espionage sort of novel, though that had proven to be abortive due to a falling out over a woman . Later, I was working on a crime novel, but I eventually lost interest, and went back to my favorite genre, horror fiction.

My favorite kind of music has the unfortunate label, "math rock."

Notable artists include Hella, Zach Hill, Don Caballero, and Tera Melos.

What I love most about it is the rhythmic complexity and the experimental song structures. There is also usually a perfect balance of aggression and elegance. Most math rock is instrumental, which I like because it makes room for even more complexity in the music but vocals in math rock are usually great.

Here is a wonderful example of math rock:

I think you and I are quite a like. And no I absolutely despise any kind of metal or stuff like that ;)

I like you also like jazz, but didn't list it since it was quite a long time since I played jazz. I started like you actually, I was trained clasically but never liked it. Absolutely got bored of classical music and since I was trained to work with sheet music I found out that I like quite more the ragtime and Jazz pieces of later times. But later I got bored with that because playing from a sheet sucks.

Today I play songs by ear, all what I listed above. Don't worry tho friend, everyone is different tho the most important thing that makes us alike is our passion for music.
