The PRS is a collection agency for composers & music artists - so whenever you want to play music in a public place be it from a recording/Music on TV/Radio/Live bands and DJs/Karaoke (ina pub/club/sports center etc) you have to buy a PRS license - which then pays royalties to the musicians.
i was wondering, how do the PRS know which songs have been played and how much?
id always assumed that everybody (DJs, pub landlords, etc) all bought a license and their money all went into a pot, which was then divided up among all the artists who were registered to them.
however, ive come to realize that this cant be the case, if it was, R.E.M. would get a payment every time Eminem was played on a pub jukebox. i realize that when something is played on the radio, playlists and tabs can be kept on the song that is played, but for DJs that own license and don't keep a playlist, how does the royalty money get shared out?
