Is that your favourites in order, Adam?

Here's how I'd arrange the Kubrick films I've seen:

A Clockwork Orange
2001: A Space Odyssey
Full Metal Jacket
Paths of Glory
Eyes Wide Shut
Spartacus
The Shining
Lolita

A lot of his films from his earlier years are subpar, but everything from 2001 to Eyes Wide Shut is a masterpiece. Kubrick makes my top ten directors - maybe even top five - on the strength of those films alone. Maybe that doesn't make much sense, since my overall average rating for him wouldn't be very high. Well, whatever. I don't care. (Anyway, aside from Werner Herzog (and even Herzog if we count shorts), I'm not sure I can think of any director who doesn't have a good amount of mediocre stuff under their belt).

I'm not sure I could choose a favourite Kubrick film: Barry Lyndon, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket are all tied in first place.

.

Yeah it is diffcult to choose a personal favourite . This may sound odd but every kubrick film despite its different genres all seem tied in the same universe in a way , i know this has to do with his style , he always gets critized or gets deemed overrated and pretenious , mainly for how he handles his subject matter. Similar to how bergman would use close up shots on peoples faces which would express more emotion than some whole two hour film . Kubrick had a simlar quality , hed always use empty space in his films as a tool i believe to show how empty real life tends to be , which i know sounds pretentious . How he deals with characters that live on the fringes of society and how they cope , is all central to his storytelling . I think the one film that sums up kubricks personal obsessive style would be " the shining " , its a film with a basic premise but so many underlying themes and ambigous characters , you fall victim to having to watch it over and over again to understand why certain things are happening , which you will only get at face value the first time watching .

I've only seen 2001 as I am a fan of Arthur C. Clarke, and I probably won't see any of his other films at the time being as I'm still young. Quite mature stuff. :?

I love Kubrick, and I can't/won't rank his films...

But, if I did, Dr. Strangelove and Lolita would be closer to the top than the bottom.

I did a paper on Dr. Stranglove for a cold war history class. It's scary how accurate and influential that movie is... Much of it is based on Herman Kahn's On Thermonuclear War, and as absurd as it is, it is not a joke.

Also,Dr. Strangelove's war room, which does not exist, can be seen in other movies like Watchmen, X-men, First Class, etc... And after being elected, it was the first thing Ronald Reagan wanted to see. He was very disappointed that it did not exist.

And Lolita has such great performances... James Mason makes my skin crawl, and Sue Lyons breaks my heart.

Don't forget his earlier work.

Paths of Glory is one of the finest War Films ever made. Whatever genre he seemed to touch, it was just absolutely dynamite.

The Killing is where The Terminator as well as Dog Day Afternoon have 'homaged' the "Gun hidden in Flowers" scene.

Personally Dr. Strangelove is my favourite, as I too recently wrote a Film Studies essay on it.

He was a genius, and has a made an ironically "nuclear" impact on the film industry.

A truly inspirational character. 8)

I own Dr. Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange on DVD. I admit I'm not too into Dr. Strangelove, but I really enjoy A Clockwork Orange.
