No. It feels too artificial.

Are you saying that these tracks aren't legit Dubstep? Because they are, the mainstream tracks have elements of Dubstep and that's what I mean, the other two are for sure Dubstep, I know what Dubstep is.

Oh dear... What has happened to DS? It's the new 'thing' at the moment, so all these pop stars remix their vapid, sugary music onto newer wobbly dubstep tracks to look 'cool and edgy'. I think Skrillex has almost singlehandedly killed dubstep for what it once was, and when Ministry of Sound gets their grubby hands on it and start doing mixes - well, you know its days are numbered.

If you're really interested in dubstep and how good it once was - go back about 4-5 years. Burial is probably on one of the greatest minds in edm - and he remained anonymous for many years cause he just wanted to make stuff he liked! No big heads here! Synkro is another good dubstep artist:

Here is one of Burial's -

Have a listen to these. They're a few years old now, but they are still fresher and better than the crap being pumped out now.

Those mainstream songs I posted are not my favorite, they are just examples. I like a certain sound to my DS, I couldn't explain it to you. I think that if people keep looking at the past and keep going back, then the music goes nowhere, personally I like where the music is going now it can be a lot better, we just have to keep moving on and experimenting. Eventually, Dubstep will have the glory it deserves.

Fair enough - you're right though, that's where DS is heading. If you like it, then that's great. I personally think DS has already peaked - don't get me wrong, I think there is still some good new stuff out there - I just think it's on its downward turn. I'm all for experimenting - I like a pretty diverse range of edm, from minimal, DS, deep house, even some D&B. Ten years ago, I was all about trance, but when it was watered down so much (Van Buuren, Corsten and Tiesto - I'm looking at you), it was just bollocks. Fifteen years ago, I was all about hip-hop, same thing, turned all gangsta, now I can't stand it.

Ah, maybe I'm just a grizzled old aspie ranting about one of my subjects!

Oh yeah! Isn't it cool how diverse DS is? I enjoy almost all the sub genres of DS except liquid dub, I don't really know what bro step is yet though... I agree with you about trance, I am patient with music so I was the only one of my siblings that listened to it. Then I found DS and I could not go back, I threw trance off the planet. I'm still the only one that listens to DS lol

I don't mean I like where it's going with pop and mainstream, I meant that I like how it's evolving.

THAT is what I'm talking about.

P.S. I'd love to hear your definition of Dubstep, OP.

The Glitch Mob
Some Mainstream

Brit/Nick/Keshit
Korn
Awolnation
Selena Gomez

Here's a Dubstep track that pumps me up
The Glitch Mob
Hearing that bass feels like power to me, I cannot get enough!

The Glitch Mob = glitch/glitch-hop/electronic
Brit/Nick/Keshit = pop/house (Tries some Skrillex style sounds, still not dubstep.)
Korn+Skrillex = metal/dubstep, this one somewhat counts but not representative of dubstep...
Awolnation = alternative/indie/rock, not even close!
Selena Gomez & The Scene = REALLY!? pop, nothing else....
The Glitch Mob = See above...

Burial to me is experimental/ambient/electronic music, not really dubstep. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Burial, but it's not what I would really call dubstep. That's not to say there's not elements of dubstep in there, but in my humble opinion they are somewhat overridden by the genres I mention above.

What should have been posted:

Something that saddens me somewhat about this new wave of dubstep recently is the over-use of pointless noises. A song should tell a story where every element has it's place. Take a look at Funtcase for example, it's just noise over a beat that doesn't match the rest of the song or really have any place in the music whatsoever... This might just be me, but that's not music, that's trying to out-do the amount of crazy sounds that other people put through what they otherwise call 'music'...

That was certainly not my intention.
I never heard of Awolnation before your post and I love that song, so thank you for introducing me to them.

For what it's worth, I hate genre classifications, I like to think of it as two genres in the world:
1. Music I personally like.
2. Music I do not like.

Unfortunately it's quite hard searching for the first genre in a record store on iTunes. The second genre is all over the place, but not much I can do about that.
I think it's worth thinking though, if it sounds like pop, it's probably pop. Might have an influence of a different genre infused into it these days, but there's common elements to dubstep that should be evident in the music.

It's ok Nebulo, it wasn't all your fault lol. It's a joint humiliation, I thought that I knew what Dubstep was but then KyushuFez comes in and tells me that it's s**t and then introduces me to those two awesome tracks. Now I don't know anything about DS, I would really really like it, if you and KyushuFez exchanged music tracks with me, then you guys could tell me if I'm a lost cause or not and I can be introduced to the real side of Dubstep.

I will always answer this question the same way.

The mainstream stuff is great to dance to when you're drunk.

The decent stuff such as Burial and Four Tet, is what I listen to on a regular basis.

Also, check out Basic Channel, and Rhythm & Sound. Both operated by the same two musicians, they are pioneers of Dub Techno.

Dubstep as we know today is a car-crash mix of Grime (2-Step) and Dub/Dub Techno. Well, that's what I think it is anyway.

What I find annoying about Dubstep is that like Drum N Bass, I find the commercial stuff too gimmicky. E.G.

As far as I'm concerned, experimental, ambient and electronic are not genres. Burial is Dubstep because it is a) Dub and b) (2-Step) Garage.
