It came out about 10 years ago that the synthpop/rock/industrial artist Gary Numan has AS. Does anyone on the forum like or listen to him?
The first time I ever heard of AS was in his biography "Praying to the Aliens."
My favorite Numan stuff is from the late 70s/early 80s and mid-90s through today (Replicas, Pleasure Principle, Telekon, I Assassin, Warriors, Sacrifice, Exile, & Pure).

I like Gary Numan! I particularly like his late 70's work with Tubeway Army, that was really inventive and we can't forget the legendary 'Cars'!

I have The Pleasure Principle and it's pretty good. I bought it because I liked "Cars" and heard good things about the album, and to date it's easily the best album I've heard of his. Replicas struck me as a bit patchy but I don't remember it that well. Sacrifice has a great sound but the songs haven't been developed enough, his later NIN-ish style had potential though. So I might check out Pure one of these days.

I don't really pay attention or even care for the promotion of undiagnosed "famous people with AS", but I really admire Gary Numan for everything he has accomplished with (actual diagnosed) AS. But that on its own hasn't inspired me to listen to any more of his music.

I remember him back from the 70s, he had one of the first polyphonic synths...;)

I agree. On a personal level, I just find it interesting that I started listening tom his records in 1996, read his biography in 1998 (where I first heard about AS), and then I'm diagnosed in 2008. AS doesn't really factor in for me, just an interesting parallel. Birds of a feather, eh?!?!

Oh I totally dig him and have ever since I heard "cars" as a kid. But does he really have Asperger Syndrome? I'd like to see some solid evidence of a (professional)diagnosis.

Why, my thoughts on Gary Numan are contained within these two reviews!

Heh, now that you mention it it seems that he hasn't bothered looking for a diagnosis himself, so I stand corrected. He may not have it, who knows.

Trust me, Gary Numan has Asperger's. I know this because I got the chance to ask him personally, if he has it before he gave a concert in Minneapolis about 2 years ago.

Love Numan, especially the newer stuff. ('Pure' rules..)

Missed out on his gig (and the chance to meet him) last weekend... Could of been interesting.

Damn this Quasi-Poverty

Like him lots... like him lots!! ! Mostly Replicas, Telekon, and some P. Principal are the most listened to albums by the Numa.

I have read that his wife has a degree in psycyhology and that she was the actual one who diagnosed him with AS. Very legitimate. And even if he had been self-diagnosed, it doesn't make him a 'lesser' aspie or anything. It is his own life and he deals with his own issues.

I like his first albums, some great synth-punk songs with sci-fi lyrics. There is a lot of alienation in his songs, I like that. I think he has a general aspie appeal. I lost interest in him after Telekon, and I'm not into that gothic industrial thing he makes these days.

He has been interviewed in Mojo magazine about his AS. He doesn't have an official diagnosis, he just took some online personality tests.

i thought he was an important part of New Wave Rock at the time, & my favorite album from then is probably Dance.

i still listen to the records a lot, & recently bought 4 or 5 of them on CD when they came into our store used.

i've heard very little of his subsequent music, but his comeback pleased me & he's disarmingly frank in the associated interviews.
he certainly sounds aspie. i see no reason to dispute it.

as an example of how far one of us can go in a field given talent & a little luck (c'mon, ten years either way & he'd've been out), his is a fascinating story. (we are the same age.)

(BTW the autobiography really needs to be put back in print, because used copies are going for $40-100...)
