This thread is where we get to discuss elves in our fantasy universes. For example, let's say you have your own variant of the popular fantasy race that you want to share, and you don't know how to. Well, here, all you have to do is describe how they look like, what makes them different, and what they are like.

My versions of elves look like four foot tall, completely hairless, tailed humans with pointy ears. Their tails are prehensile and two feet long. The skin is usually has a grey, dark purple, or golden tone to an off-white base color. The eyes can be cyan, indigo, red, or a neon-green. They have usually grey morality, with a tinge of black humor and a nice streak of sarcasm. They are usually intelligent, yet have enough arrogance to make them have to be reminded that they aren't superior to others in every way at least once every few months. The only thing that they think they are NOT superior to is other elves, especially if it's a ruler.

What is your's?

There is a city of elves who live on the northern coast of Mira von Aur. Like yours, they're about 4 feet tall, but because Mira von Aur is perpetually snow covered. these elves have pale white skin and slits for eyes which protect them from the frequent blinding snow drifts. The elves of Mira von Aur are skilled at fishing. They especially love to hunt the blue striped whale in the frigid seas of the northern coast. Not for the faint hearted, the blue striped whale swim faster than any known whale in the world. Their jaws are so powerful that they've been known to dislodge huge icebergs in their quest for undersea meals.

There was a time when the elves thought they would become extinct. The more powerful, more equipped Thorian giants from the south wanted to capture the blue striped whales for themselves. Naturally, a war ensued. Many lives were lost in the 5 days Battle of Endor. The giants almost won, but the clever elves had found a way to make the whales disappear. Learning their language, their best swimmers lured the whales to a location the giants never knew about. When the giants realized the whales had disappeared, they ceased fighting and returned to their homeland.

After the war, the elves stopped hunting the whales. They learned how to live without their prized meat and skin and learned to cultivate the land. It was a happy symbiosis, and together, the Thorian giants never threatened the northern sphere again.

So...are they like a combination between the Danes and the Eskimos? Or something else entirely?

They're something else entirely. You can say, if you want, they exist on Alternate Earth. Or, if you prefer, you create a world where they exist. It'll be cool.

I hope that I didn't offend you by considering them as such.

Anyway, my elves exist in a fictional universe separate from the Jabbernak one. This one takes place on a world that basically has inspiration from Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, Dwarf Fortress, and my own mind. They have a grudge against dwarves and orcs, and use chariots. They don't like hills, but love forests.

Sorry to say, but whale skin is very thin and unsuitable for use as leather etc. What is eaten, besides the meat, is the "mataq" (pronounced mattdeq in greenlandic) the outermost layer of blubber and skin. The most priced pice of mateq is the qiporaq, the piece below the mouth (the chin). It is often eaten raw and the different species of whale taste different.

Whale and other seamammals are an very important part of the diet of arctic people, without which they can not get enough vitamins. Vegetables and fruit do not abound in the far north. A traditional way of preserving berries for the winter, is to conserve them in blubber from marine mammals.

My elves live among us, almost indistinguishable from humans.

They usually have longer hair over the eartips, but some ears show and only have a slight point.

You can spot them if you watch carefully.

Also I made a thread called 'Dwarves' for those of you who don't like Elves.

They never exceed five feet in height and are generally far under that. Their skin, in its natural state, is a lovely opal like color, shimmering with rainbows. But they are like cameleons and change to bled with their enviroment. Instead of pointed ears, theirs are very long and can be like a rabbits, though furless, because they can fall forward to lie over their chest, or stand erect ad unfurled when startled. they tips of their ears have tiny scales that also shift color, and when crush and brewed can be used for medicinal purposes.
They rarely wear clothing, and their hair is almost alway short and light colored. They have slitted pupils and their eyes are large, huge orbs of shimmering black, blue or opal white.
They are extremly shy and do nt speak. They cannot be heard by humans because their voices have a unique pitch. They specialize is medicines and strange jewels they create themselves.
However, they are not human-like at all. They do not acknowledge humananitys definition of honor, and never face their enemies face to face. They attack from hiding and generally use poisons. After their victims are dead, they harvest their teeth and use them as beads.
They are very similiar in appearance, as the females have no curves. Androgenous is the right word. True mavericks of this species tend to hire themselves off as assassins, but more often than not kill their employer.
They live deep in forests, and either roost in trees or underground, but never in between.
I could go on and on, but I'll end here, even though I have many other elves that I created. These are the most unique though.
Ah, Elves of all sorts, how I love thee! Elegant, lethal and ever so mysterious

Midgard Ljosalfar (homebrew):
General traits:

  • Live apart from most other sapient species(/races), attempting to reconstruct apparently glorious civilization
  • Generally shun technology in favor of magic perceived as, "more practical option," often seen as cunning and manipulative threats
  • Regard consumption of dead of other sapient species(/races) as highest honor rather than unthinkable act
  • Often attempt involvement in international issues, frequent destination for refugees from neighbors
Physical traits:
  • Appearance perceived to be quite attractive, cause of rumors regarding ljosalfar as similar to trapping animals such as ant lion
  • Only a few inches above human average
  • Slightly weaker than average human
  • Generally more dexterous and capable of subterfuge than average human
Midgard Dokkalfar (homebrew):
General traits:
  • Often driven underground due to perception as savages, perceived as unorganized and uncivilized
  • Somewhat less concerned with acceptable actions of other species(/races), i.e. looser sense of morality and ethics
  • Dokkalfar nations almost never friendly with other underground nations
  • May or may not have an arachnoid goddess, less likely than ljosalfar to consume sapient species(/races)
Physical traits:
  • Somewhat frail but faster than most humans
  • Skin generally very pale as a result of adaptation to caves
  • Fairly good hearing results in excellence at sneaking
  • Eyesight generally poor

Tolkien already has done that.

A note about my elves:

They have a simple caste system in the main government that is spilt into three groups based on skin color:Milogens(Military, grey skin), Merogens(Merchants, Artisans, Priests, & Scientists, gold skin), Altogens(Nobles and Royals, purple skin.) The prime minister(who is still under the power of the current monarch) is decided by a chess-like game in series of tournaments. The winner is, of course, the new PM.
Now, you might ask, how do they get food for themselves? They use non-elven surfs to do the work that aren't also dwarves or orcs. Treatment is often harsh and the pay is little more than being able to eat food.

Anything interesting, or not?
