Master Studies for Art?

I was wondering if master studies had to be done from the actual work being studied. I live close to an art museum, but there are a-lot of people there. Thar makes me really, really uncomfortable. The Idea of sitting there for hours on end copying something...just the idea makes me anxious. With so much else going on around me I don't think I could do a proper study anyway.
I don't want to neglect this part of my training, but I'm not sure I could even complete it if it has to be done from life.
