So lately I've been getting into Brazillian music in general and more specifically into Bossa Nova which, IMHO, is totally timeless though is certainly long past the peak of its popularity. I'm sure I've mostly just scratched the surface so far but albums / artists I've been listening to:

"Jazz Samba" - Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd
"Getz / Gilberto" - Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto
"Jazz Samba Encore" - Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa
"Stan Getz Featuring Laurindo Almeida" - Stan Getz and Laurindo Almeida
"Des Anos Depois" - Nara Leao
"Chega De Saudade" - Joao Gilberto
"The Frankfurt Opera Concert" - Baden Powell

Anyone else share my new-found interest in this sort of music, care to discuss or have any other recommendations along these lines?

Here's a few samples:

i guess i am a brazilian music dilletante, in that i like the light stuff, as filtered through anglo artists such as vince guaraldi and walter wanderley, both distinctive keyboard artists. julia louis dreyfuss [a comic who is also a superbly talented singer] did a tasty version of "so nice" [aka "summer samba" or "samba de verao" if you wanna find a recording of it] on an episode of "seinfeld"-

the late brazilian singer agostinho dos santos was the beautiful voice synching "manha de carnaval" ["morning of carnival"] behind soccer star breno mello in this scene from "orfeu negro"-

heartbreakingly beautiful, IMHO.

Totally agree ... Manha de Carnaval is one of the best in this genre, the melody is so beautiful. So many have recorded it, this version is probably one of my favorites, no vocals but Baden Powell plays it beautifully on guitar and is too cool to even put his cigarette down while he does it.

Hey, what is this? Was Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water ripped off of this song by Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz?

Probably the best of the lot: Chico Buarque's Roda Viva:

Instrumental version of João Gilberto's Wave, by Tom Jobim and Toquinho:

Not really Bossa Nova, but since everyone here is posting MPB and Samba, here is one of the best sambas, by Adoniran Barbosa and Demônios da Garoa:

Here is another one by Adoniran, sang by Elis Regina:

You know, it feels really weird to mix words from my native language with words from English language... :?
