Just recently discovered this guy for myself. Pretty incredible, if you ask me. On par with Dylan as a lycricist, and yet his voice is (in my opinion) more pleasant, and his guitar work is pretty nice, too. How does his music manage to remain obscure? Perhaps for the very reasons I listed as to why I found it to be top-quality. Anyways, anyone familiar with him? Favorite songs?

Personal favorites include: Lungs, The Tower Song, Waitin' Around To Die, Our Mother The Mountain, Miss Carousel, Snow Don't Fall, etc.

Absolutely, his best songs are at least as good as Dylan's in my opinion. I discovered his music just after he died and a alternative radiostation played Kathleen and Waiting Around To Die as a tribute, one line of that melancholic dark voice and I was hooked.
His studio albums are somewhat overproduced and therefore I prefer Live at the Old Quarter. To Live Is To Fly might be my favorite song if songwriting ever became a contest which luckily will never be the case in my home...

Thanks for reminding, perhaps you might like Mark Lanegans Carry Home also?

Yes, I rather like his work. Interesting guy, great lyrics. I'm not usually a lryics person.

I also love 'To Live is To Fly', my favourite.

Townes VanZandt OH yeah. My favorite song; Pancho & Lefty. Here's EmmyLou Harris & Rodney Crowell giving it a go.

Townes Van Zandt is pretty high up there amongst musicians I like. I tend to like his darker songs such as "A Song For" "Rake" "Marie" "Nothin" although I perhaps my favorite is the live version of "To Live is to Fly" on "Live at the Old Quarter"
