I can’t decide whether Swiss surrealist painter H.R. Giger is one of my obsessions or whether I’m just a regular fan, but I own several of his books and have put up two posters of his in my flat. I have also seen four of his exhibitions, the Alien exhibition in Zurich in 1980, a retrospective of his works in Pfäffikon in 1984, the Alien 3 exhibition in Zurich in 1993, and the Giger Museum in Gruyère in 2004. I particularly like his early work, such as his satirical ink drawings and his bathroom paintings.

If I could afford it, I would buy one of Giger’s Harkonnen chairs. I sat in one at the restrospective exhibition, and they are much more comfortable than they look.

Gigeriffic. He kicks ass. I don't know all of his work but I do like what I've seen and what he's inspired (such as Aliens).

H. R. Giger created the Alien creature and all the Alien-related effects for James Cameron. His work is now iconic and undeniably part of pop culture. Man's a friggin genius. BTW, how the hell do you pronounce his name?

Yeah, those Harkonnen chairs are cool. But will they go with IKEA furniture? I think Giger designed these chairs to be set-pieces and not actual furniture for anyone's home. We can't really get a sense of scale for the Harkonnen chair. What are the specs for this item?

I suppose the reason I like his work too, is that his fascination of the bizarre hit close to home with me. He reminds me, with much comfort, that I'm not the only weirdo on this planet! :P

Giger, Waita Uziga, and Edward Gorey are my 3 most favorite artists/illustrators. ^_^

It's true the Harkonnen chairs were originally designed for a film version of "Dune" that never came to fruition, but they are used as furniture in the Giger bars in Chur and Gruyère, and people like to have their pictures taken in one. The inside is lined with padded rubber.

BTW, Giger's name is pronounced with two hard g's as in "giggle", but a long "ee": "Geegur"

I don't know much about art, but I know what I like.

Giger is the only artist whose name I knows because I personally like his work - not because everyone else does.

Waita Uziga is rather insipid. Im certainly not offended by his art, it just bores me and grosses me out.

Where can I find Uziga prints online?

Saw some of H. R. Giger's work in a gallery in SoHo, NYC not long after Alien came out in the theaters. To see his original art, close up, is inspiring. So very meticulously detailed, yet organic, alive, and flowing. Disturbingly realistic. 8O
They had some film clips of him working on the set of Alien.

Since you like Giger so much Veresae, I suggest you check out the Beksinski thread cuz Beksinski and Giger are uncannily similar

When I was a kid and I first saw Alien it freaked me out but left me with a fascination of HR Giger. His work is disturbing and yet it drags you in. Its almost as if you know what he is trying to portray. Every time I see any of his stuff I get a sense of "been there", I don't know if that tells me how disturbed I am or not but his art is certainly familiar some how. A bit like Dali paintings, the surreal nature is hard to dismiss.

I think Giger tries to cross the line between living and non living, and tries to challenge our belief that only life has a consciousness.

I've been a fan of his work since I was a kid, I've got a large "poster size" print of his work in my home office. I've also ...somewhere around here have a coffee table book of his artwork and biography.
pic is terrible, me in my halloween costume....look on wall.......
