I'm no musicologist, so I'm not sure what I'm hearing, but I find I'm really attracted to something about the vocals in some certain songs. Maybe it's the key and mode, maybe it's the lyrical styl, maybe it's the bassline; who knows. If anyone with more music knowledge out there knows, feel free to share.

Songs like:

Terminal Choice - Don't Go
Smile Empty Soul - Don't Ever Leave

Those are the best two examples I've found without digging through my iTunes library and the depths of YouTube for more. I know they sound like they've got nothing in common, but I swear, there's something in there; something bout them. Something about the lyrics or something; I'm not sure, though.

I'm not sure if this is what you're meaning, but are you talking about the backing vocalists singing in vocal harmony? Queen were the masters of that.

Nope. It's something about the vocal style itself, not the backing harmonies. Like, it's almost rap, but not quite; or something. That kind of vocal style is why I'm a big fan of certain nu-metal bands.
