I am a third year Violin student, sitting ABRSM Grade 2. I am interested to see if there is any other users of WP that play the violin.

I am totally infatuated with violin. I've taken lessons but I can't say that I ever really learned to play. Do you like scales? I love scales, they're soothing.

I play and teach the violin, among other things.
What pieces are you doing for your ABRSM exam?

I recently wondered if I should've tried playing violin instead of french horn all those years ago.

I don't play violin myself, but I have two questions. First, what is ABRSM? and second, how many grades are there in this field of study?

I am playing Kemp's Jig, Frolicher Landmann and Carribean Sunshine. I was going to play Rondo as an alternative to the former, and Cossacks as an alternative to the latter, but they were far too difficult, so I transferred to the present pieces.

ABRSM = Association Board of the Royal School of Music

I believe there is 8-10. But, this has no relevance to me, so I am unsure!

Kemp's Jig, Frolicher Landmann and Carribean Sunshine. I also like Rigaudon, but I chose Kemp's Jig first.

I play the djembe, but I love the violin. It is the only clasical instrument that I like, but I like it best with a piano

I'm surprised there isn't a post yet where someone with AS said they weren't "suffering" from it... just that some feel they do and some feel they don't.

Anywho...

I picked up the violin about a month or so ago. I'm doing a pretty good job of adapting to it, my main problem is my right hand bowing technique. I am holding the bow, but it's just that I'm not skilled yet at going from string to string, or coordinating individual notes between the left and right hand. Though the latter I'm getting better at.

Playing the "high" notes above "B" on the E string, however, is beyond me so far! I'll figure that out soon... I'm considering getting a tape to mark the fret, for the 7th "fret" only.

I thought so too! ( to the former)

Bowing is super-simple after a few years.

I am a third year student, and I still have tape on my violin. I do not pay any attention to it for normal playing, but it is convenient for playing scales that have flats, particularly the melodic minor scales for ABRSM.

Yay! I love violin!! !

And yes - "suffering" is a curious term. I think I'd suffer with it or without it.

I only know the Suzuki books - not so much grades - because that's mostly what my teacher uses. Though he supplements with other material - loose sheet music. Right now I am loosely in volume 4 and am working on the 3rd movement of the Vivaldi Concerto in A Minor. We've worked through the 1st movement which I really like and am continuing to practice.

It's so cool to see other violinists here, too.

At first the violin is a difficult instrument. It is hard for most people, there alone (I am going to use this term for once) an 'Aspie', with difficulty multiple tasking.

My teacher encourages me to do ear training which I do through musictheory.net and some through vol.2 of Ariella Vaccarino's CD set. And I practice piano with an emphasis on scales. I put the Ear Master software on my wishlist, too.

What do you all do as supplemental practice?

Yes, I've found it much more difficult than learning piano.
