This is a continuation of a conversation that auntblabby and I started on another almost totally unrelated thread, so I brought it here.

For those of you who like this kind of music, who are your favorite singers of the era?

Mine are;

Frank Sinatra (he has to be first, if not, then three guys in a big black car will drive up and shoot me)
Dean Martin (I loved to hear that drunken slur he used to sing and talk with)
Wayne Newton (Mr Las Vegas himself!)
Tony Bennet (he's the best)
Louis Prima (he sang Angelina, and many other great songs, but that one is the one that most people know)

Honorable mention goes to Desi Arnaz. Not so much for outstanding talent, but because when I was a little girl I wanted to marry Ricky Ricardo and would walk around singing Babaloo.

Who are yours?

Maybe a tad early, but Bing Crosby. (i'm not so sure if it was 40's?)
& Frank Sinatra goes without saying. :D

*lenny welch- he could sing the tears right outta my eyes in songs like "since i fell for you." :( superb set of genes allows him to still perform 50 years later. wow.
*bobby darin- he could do it all. man, that guy was SWINGIN' :thumleft: but born with a bum heart that killed him at 37. in songs as varied as "my buddy" and "mac the knife" he made 'em all his own.
*johnny desmond- the voice of an angel [in both german and english!], a masculine yet pretty voice, that sounded like it was talking to me even though it wasn't, in songs like "i'm a fool to want you" and "long ago and far away."
*gayle mccormick- front person of "smith" - a blonde bombshell with an emotive voice that was both sweet and powerful and could cut through a rock band at full tilt. on a recent [taped back in the early 00s] PBS oldies special, she filled in for grace slick in a reunion of starship. she still had it. "baby, it's [still] YOU!" :thumleft:
*frances farmer- a woefully underutilized talent, with a contralto voice similar to marion anderson. her parents screwed her over bigtime.
*betty hutton- a female frank sinatra. she could do it all. career cut tragically short. the song "stuff like that there" was HER!
*goldie hawn. another voice that for some reason is just not being heard in a musical context. she can sing like a bird! she needs to sing some more!
*sandra dee, with a delicate, wistful, yearningly sad voice, perfect for torch songs. her version of "when i fall in love" made me wanna go back in the WABAC machine and give her a hug. :(
*judy garland, the artie shaw of female voices, the iconic model for american torch singers. another one lost to drug overdose. her version of "blues in the night" [aka "my momma done tol' me"] was the signature one.
*agostinho dos santos- he was the rich, dark and masculine voice behind the lip/syncing brazilian soccer star breno mello in "orfeu negro" [black orpheus]. his life was cut short in a 1973 paris plane crash. what a voice. :( his version of "manha de carnaval" is the one, the only one.
*"mr five-by-five" himself, the inimitable jimmy rushing. man, that big guy with the big voice could boom out the volume! back in the day his voice would cut through a big band in full cry, but always with the right syncopated notes.
*tom jones, the pete fountain of male singers. he can belt 'em 'til the cows come home, even now at his advanced age. what a superb set of genes that man has.
and last but not least, the late great dusty springfield.

Roy Orbison. And I also believe he shares the title of best singer in the world with Freddie Mercury.

Auntblabby, I love Bobby Darin's "Beyond The Sea". I usually hate to hear someone cover it, but there is one guy on YouTube who actually does it justice. Ben Sharkey. He sings a lot of those older songs, and he's great! I want his itunes album. Here,

I'll post the "Beyond The Sea" video of him. Tell me what you think please.

(BTW, I can post videos just fine, but for some reason I cannot see them at all on the forum using Explorer. They work in Safari, is there something I need to do? YouTube and everything else works for me.)

reminds me a bit of that old andy kauffman sketch about the lip-syncing person who is playing a record that has vocal parts separated widely in time, and during the non-vocal intervals he has to just awkwardly stand there and look cute. but seriously, he's alright. i wish i was young like him.

on yahoo answers, this is what i was able to find-

Are you getting the dreaded "Bad Request"?

If "your browser sent a request that this server could not understand"
and "size of request header field exceeds server limit", your request
is a bad or oversized cookie. (The same thing is true for "Error 400").

Simply delete your "Cookies" and everything
will be okay. Don't worry about erasing them;
nothing bad will happen. You won't lose your
internet browser's "Bookmarks" or "Favorites".
The worst thing that could happen is you will
be asked to retype your username/password
when you return to YouTube and some other
websites -- that's all.

As you're dumping your cookies, you should
also erase all your "Temporary Internet Files"
and "History". This will render your computer
totally "fresh" in YouTube's eyes. It would be
best if you shutdown / reboot after doing this:

Internet Explorer 6:
→ Tools → Internet Options
→ Delete Cookies → OK
→ Delete Files → OK
→ Clear History → Yes
→ OK

Internet Explorer 7:
→ Tools → Internet Options → Delete...
→ Delete files → Yes
→ Delete cookies → OK
→ Delete history → OK
→ Close (browsing history window)
→ OK
