Anyone else like his work? I read the Belgariad and the Malloreon, then the two prequel novels.

As he originally hailed from Spokane, Washington, I was able to see him in a discussion at a Sci/fi convention when I was a kid. Admittedly, I don't recall much of the talk. He had originally worked at a local Safeway, where he bagged groceries - which is inspiration for all us struggling writers who live in obscurity and genteel poverty.

I read the Belgariad and Mallorean. Not certain if I read the prequels.

I've read most of his work. My least favorite series was the Belgariad.

IMHO the two prequels, 'Belgarath the sorceror' and 'Polgara the sorceress' are two of his best books, along with 'The redemption of Althalus'. The Elenium and Tamuli series were also very good.

I find it pretty amazing that all of his books were hand written. He never used a typewriter.

When I was a teenager, I read them all, about a dozen times each. I could tell you all the names of each kingdom and royal family (don't think I still can though). It was a great escape to get absorbed into the story. I haven't read any fantasy novels I've liked as much since, except Tolkien, especially when the movies came out.

Some people criticize his writing but I find it one of the most accessible styles I've ever read. I'd really like to see an excellent series of movies made on the Belgariad and the Mallorean. I liked the other books too, but I found the Sparhawk-Queen Elena marriage to be quite inappropriately disgusting. Sparhawk's a dirty old man - she could do better.
