My favorite song is the ninth Symphony from the New World by Antonin Dvorak

I have 2 at the moment. Gotye "Seven hours with a back seat driver". The Cure "Bare". Music can be a real factor in moods at least to me. It has changed my whole day for the better.

Actually, Dvorak's symphony doesn't fit the definition of a song, it's just a piece of music. I always wanted to be super nit-picky and say that lol! An excellent choice though ;).

If we're talking any music at all, my favorite piece of music is definitely Mahler's second symphony. Strictly more modern-day songs, would be "Who knows where the time goes", by Sandy Denny. And in terms of classical songs....it's a toss-up between a few but I'd probably say Mahler's "Ich Bin der Welt".

Sandy Denny - Who knows where the time goes (cover version but I'd say it's the best performance I've ever heard): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85W0JQMLJ8g

SRV's cover of "Little Wing."

It can bring me to tears in the wrong moment.

I know it's not the best song ever, but my favourite song will always be this one:

I've explained this one on another forum just weeks ago. I'll quote myself here:

Quote:
It's silly, but my favourite song has been Wham!'s The Edge of Heaven for some 15 years now. I know that there are better songs, in writing and composition, and I know that George Michael himself has songs that are miles ahead of anything from his Wham! years (and he remains my favourite singer), but The Edge of Heaven just does it for me on a purely intuitive, irrational level. Hard to explain, it's just one of those songs that got lodged in my brain and can't be wedged loose. I find it a very energizing song that builds to a climax and has an intriguing interlude between the second and third chorus. The 'yeah yeah yeahs' also make for a great intro and recurring motif throughout the song.

Hey, that's what a good pop song does; appeal to subconscious raw emotion and make you move your body. :P

it would have to be "what child is this/greensleeves." it is a timeless melody, from centuries past, with no known attribution. my fave performance of it would be by william wilde zeitler, on his "mid winter phantasy" CD. since this version is not on youtube, here is an equally beautiful composition of his, submitted for your enjoyment-
