everytime I set foot in my local kmart, they have been playing nothing but late 90s and early 2000s edm (electronic dance music)
What is wrong with them? I love the music myself! But not everybody listens to it? what is with kmart radio they use to play rock music but no longer.

Ive spent long hours at Kmart stores this past few weeks counting their inventory and I havent noticed that. But they put me in the back room this year- so I dont hear their muzak much.

I work as a counter for an inventory company that counts various mostly retail company's inventory. And I also work for a party dj company.

So im a conniesseur of store muzak.

Some stores have unique music packages. But most seem to have the same mix of songs.

Never encountered an all techno muzak store (except maybe Hot Topic or some such hip youth boutique type place).

Old Navy used to play alot of dance music though, but not so much lately. In fact some years ago the old navy muzak package included one really whicked cool dance remix of a David Bowie classic (forget which David Bowie song it was now) that had a Bhangra ( Indian) flavor to dance beats they put under David Bowie's vocals giving it an exotic sound. But even when I went to a store that specialized in obscure 12 inch dance records for club deejays I couldnt find it and the staff didnt know anything about the recording. Damn!

There was a clothing store we did that was all rap though.

But most stores have a similar ( I suspect the same) package of current and classic pop hits. Mostly the original artists but many songs are offbrand covers of hits redone by obscure artists. For example every store seems to play "umbrella" but its always that same obscure girl doing a cover version. Its never the Rihanna version.

They seem to run on a three hour cycle. So if you work all day in the same store you start to hear songs repeat.

In my work day at the inventory job - well- the day is never done until I hear Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas singing that "Big Girls Dont Cry" song( not the Franki Valli and the Four Seasons "big girls dont cry'- a different song- that " i hope you know this has nothing to do with you" song). I swear every store plays that song once every three hours.

You used to hear "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray in every store as well ( I wanna get lost in your rocknroll and drift away...) But lately im starting to not hear that old standby.

I'm just a big dance music fan, old and new. The music just gives me energy and makes me happier.

Some stores that I constantly hear techno music playing here are:
-Dynamite
-Abercrombie & Fitch
-Hollister
-GUESS?
-Jean Machine

I actually love when they play loud, techno music in a store but sometimes it's too loud, almost like you're at a night club and you can't hear anything which is not what I want in a clothing store. I mean, I even like when they play loud music but not too loud that you can't hear the cashier.

Probably someone in upper management of the local store's personal preference. God bless this man.

Can the department store speakers here even properly play techno music without getting all scratchy?? One thing I seem to find is that some have trouble with the mainstream stuff because there's a lot of synthesizer in it :?

Yeah we count A+F, and Hollister. I have noticed that in those stores.

My favourite clothing shop here (Debenhams) has been doing something which I find really irritating. They're playing pretty decent mainstream music, but it sounds like the karaoke version. It sounds like the original artist's version of the song (with all the music and backing vocals), just minus the lead vocals. What's that all about?

If it's the exact instrumental and all, and just missing the vocals, well, honestly, it's probably because most mainstream music today is too racy to play in public. "Superman that hoe." comes to mind. So if you play the instrumentals, no complaints from people about lyrical content.

It's the instrumental plus the backing vocals, just crying out for a lead singer.
