My coworker told me a story one time. He was living in a neighborhood in Baltimore, sitting on his stoop hanging out with his friends. They see this guy walking down the road. Long blonde hair, leather jacket, skinny blue jeans, guitar strapped to his back. Dude looks just like Tom Petty. They're not convinced it's him though, why would Tom Petty be walking down the street alone in some random Baltimore neighborhood? So my coworker decides to mess with the guy, as he passes them he shouts to the man "Hey! Where are you going, Tom Petty?"
The man turns and looks at him and says "wherever the wind takes me..." and keeps on walking.
To this day they aren't sure if the man actually was Tom Petty, and I wasn't certain of the validity of the story either.
However, a few years after he told me, I was reading a Tom Petty interview in an article. Someone asked him where his career was going next, if he was going to continue to tour or make more albums. Tom Petty responds, "I'm just going wherever the wind takes me".
Beautiful story.
