Favourite Lyrics, and why?
What do, specific, lyrics mean to you?
I was listening to the Smiths recently and forgot just how much their lyrics were relevant to me, so, here they are.
"Sixteen, Clumsy and Shy,
I went to London and Died"
In my case it would read "seventeen, clumsy and shy, went to school and died" as the song said, it's "The story of my life".
"I wear Black on the outside
'Cause Black is how I feel on the inside
And if I seem a little strange
Well, that's because I am"
Describes me perfectly.
Anyone else got lyrics that they can't forget, or mean a lot to them?
I went to London and Died"
In my case it would read "seventeen, clumsy and shy, went to school and died" as the song said, it's "The story of my life".
Everone always uses this Moz quote but I think "Girl affraid" is the perfect incapulation of Tennage shyness, lonliness and indecision
Girl afraid
Where do his intentions lay ?
Or does he even have any ?
She says :
"He never really looks at me
I give him every opportunity
In the room downstairs
He sat and stared
In the room downstairs
He sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again !"
I'll never make that mistake again
I'll never make that mistake again
Boy afraid
Prudence never pays
And everything she wants costs money
"But she doesn't even LIKE me !
And I know because she said so
In the room downstairs
She sat and stared
In the room downstairs
She sat and stared
I'll never make that mistake again !
pure simple perfection
Yes, i grew up listening to The Smiths.
It's strange( Morrissey is obviously very talented), but i don't think he has come up with anything lyrically in the last 20 years to match what he wrote in his early years.
As for others...
Ian Curtis i find very powerful.
And ones which spring to mind at this present time are:
Leonard Cohen ('Famous Blue Raincoat').
And for some unknown reason: the line in The Cure's 'Edge Of The Deep Green Sea'..
'she hangs herself in front of me
slips her dress like a flag to the floor
and hands in the sky
surrenders it all...'
(The Cure have other moments, for some reason this springs to mind at present.)
Ask me tomorrow, i would reply with something completely different.
"Ana's Song (Open Fire)" By Silverchair always gets to me, it makes me cry though i'm not too sure what it's about.
"Please die Ana
For as long as you're here we're not
You make the sound of laughter
and sharpened nails seem softer
And I need you now somehow
And I need you now somehow
Open fire on the needs designed
On my knees for you
Open fire on my knees desires
What I need from you"
Also by Silverchair is "Suicidal Dreams" it's sort of morbid but to me is an almost perfect description of suicide contemplation, and are things i have thought myself.
"I dream about, how its going to end,
Approaching me quickly,
Leaving a life of fear,
I only want my mind to be clear,
People, making fun of me,
For no reason but jealousy,
I fantasise about my death,
Ill kill myself from holding my breath,
My suicidal dream,
Voices telling me what to do,
My suicidal dream,
Im sure you will get yours too,
Help me, comfort me,
Stop me from feeling what Im feeling now,
The rope is here,
Now Ill find a use,
Ill kill myself,
Ill put my head in a noose,
My suicidal dream,
Voices telling me what to do,
My suicidal dream,
Im sure you will get yours too,
Dreamin about my death, dream,
Suicidal, suicidal, suicidal dream,
Im suicidal,
Suicidal dream,"
Ironically, i listen to it when i'm really upset and it makes me feel better, no idea why, though the lyrics, i think, are really powerful.
"It's strange( Morrissey is obviously very talented), but i don't think he has come up with anything lyrically in the last 20 years to match what he wrote in his early years."
Well I think most artists have thier best stuff in the early days when they just want to say something or create art rather than writing because they need a new albums soon he has had some great post Smiths moments "Why dont you find out for yourself" is probably my favorite
Im also a big fan of Cathal Coughlan Viva Dead Ponies the dubut full lenth of Coughlans second band Fatima Mansions was Morrisseys favorite album of 1990. He Started of in the indie pop band Microdisney mixing crisp upbeat music with dark bleak lyrics, then formed Fatima Mansions mixing his dark lyrics/vocals with dark/bleak music after they split he went solo and has releases some great ballady orchestral albums.
some snipits of his lyrical genieus include
Fatima Mansions- Chemical Cosh
"They will have it known you're mad if you don't fit (with) their equation
They will have you for not being rich or body-tax evasion
and they'll pay some stoned stockbroker's son
to phone and say, "I'm coming 'round and bringing my machine gun!""
Fatima Mansions- Pack of Lies
"He would caox her mind with talk of love to make her body kind
Because people hate the truth, you know; they need their pack of lies"
Fatima Mansions-Popemobile to payaguay
"By the foul Adriatic there can be some dramatic
variations in the temperature
so you can't recall which S.S. dress to wear
but the king of the Papists is a friend of the rapists
and the upside-down crucifixion squad
so escape from sure defeat is thus arranged"
"It's been a while since you said heil
You CIA-bred necrophile
No Russkies left to rail at, not for now
but the Slavs in their millions
with their scrapheaps of children
must replace your South Americans
More skulls to keep your Mafia in the Mafia Top Ten
They'll mass when commanded, they'll hate when they're told
They'll murder their neighbours for the good of their soul
They'll punish your enemies if you'll read out their names"
You know, I'm a sucker of lyrics that deal with sci-fi and fantasy, so I adore the lyrics for some of Orgy's Vapor Transmission album.
Currently I can really relate to the lyrics for "Somewhere" by Within Temptation...some of my topics in the Haven have noted my ridiculous but obsessive quest to find my ideal dream girl. Blah.
I also absolutely love the lyrics of "Insanity" by Oingo Boingo, since it's so blatantly anti-Christian.

Haysi Fantayzee - Shiny, Shiny
Good times come to me now,
good times come to me now,
I aint lying 'cos there aint no time no city.
Its a pity 'cos I dress divine,
City smokes-people choke
Big meanie he's a genie und we ain't got no hope.
No chance-no chance
Well, I feel fine
no it ain't no crime
I was dreamin' of a demon and I ate a dime
The dime floats
the cornel floats
Send him up the hill boys, this aint no joke.
No chance-no chance-no chance-no chance
Shiny, shiny bad times behind me
Shiny,shiny sha-na-na-na
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me.
Your sure look fine your shoes they look fine,
Mercury dan with the spiky hand,
I'm a hot ret*d,
Marquis de Sade
No chance-no chance-no chance.
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me.
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me
Shiny,Shiny bad times behind me
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me
Saw a cop on this line
machine gun shine
I was dreaming not beliving that I was alive.
My mind broke
the cop choked
Get out of here, boy,or I'll use the Colt
No chance,no chance
You sure look fine your shoes they shine
No heat can compare with this blue-eyed liar.
Press the button
Press the button-its all remote
No- chance-no chance-no chance-no chance
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me
Shiny,shiny bad times behind me.
This song brings back cool memories of the 1980s

My favourite lyrics happen to be about the Routemaster!
Double Decker Bus by The Count Five
Well, just you walk down any street
You're sure to meet one of us
Well, if you don't meet one of us
You're sure to see a Double Decker Bus
Here comes a Double Decker Bus
Get aboard, now don't you fuss
go for a ride on this Double Decker Bus
It can take you so far away
Take your bike through the city on some other day
Come on, get aboard
Oh please gor for a ride on a Double Decker Bus
It can take you so far away
Take a ride on your bike through the city
On some other day
My favorite lyricists......
Leah Andreone,Honey Dogs(in 10,000 years album),The Replacements,Elvis Costello,The Smiths,Bob Dylan,Counting Crows
Smiths line....
Pin and mount me
like a butterfly
but take me to the haven
of your bed
is some thing that you never said(paraphrase)
Leah Andreone.....
Dying to scream
so I hide and sing
Adisillussioned voyeur
Studying the sane
God keeps whispering in the devils ear
Hallalujah
Things are getting weird
I'm nakedly perverted
Possessive and free
I want to run away
but I never want to leave
I got an axe to gring and a mouth to match
You better hear me out
Dont let me crash
I'm black,I'm white
I'm the human race
Call me Eve
Hows the apple taste
In a perfect world
I'ld find my place
Try to change me
What a f%^&ed up waste

At The Moment?
This:
"Welcome to where time stands still
no one leaves and no one will
Moon is full, never seems to change
just labeled mentally deranged
Dream the same thing every night
I see our freedom in my sight
No locked doors, No windows barred
No things to make my brain seem scarred
Sleep my friend and you will see
that dream is my reality
They keep me locked up in this cage
can't they see it's why my brain says Rage
Sanitarium, leave me be
Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Build my fear of what's out there
and cannot breathe the open air
Whisper things into my brain
assuring me that I'm insane
They think our heads are in their hands
but violent use brings violent plans
Keep him tied, it makes him well
he's getting better, can't you tell?
No more can they keep us in
Listen, damn it, we will win
They see it right, they see it well
but they think this saves us from our hell
Sanitarium, leave me be
Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Sanitarium, just leave me alone
Fear of living on
natives getting restless now
Mutiny in the air
got some death to do
Mirror stares back hard
Kill, it's such a friendly word
seems the only way
for reaching out again."
- Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - By Metallica.
Why?
Because I like James Hetfield's random lyrics along with the catchy metal riffs.
He once said "The lyrics I write, I write pretty much for myself. I'm not telling people how to think."

Oh, man... I have so many.
First, from 'America' by Paul Simon, a favourite lyric I share with my best friend:
''Kathy,' I said 'I'm lost', though I knew she was sleeping
'I'm empty and aching and I don't know why''
All of Elvis Costello's 'I Want to Vanish', because sometimes I do.
I love a lot of Fall Out Boy's wordplay-- my favourite lyrics of theirs mostly come from 'Sugar We're Going Down':
'I'm just a notch in your bedpost but you're just a line in a song'
'We're always sleeping in and sleeping for the wrong team'
From Taking Back Sunday's 'Cute Without the 'E' (Cut From the Team)' because I like the poetry of it:
'Hoping for the best just hoping nothing happens
A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins
I will never ask if you don't ever tell me
I know you well enough to know you'll never love me'
From 'Boy Meets Boy' from 'Boy Meets Boy':
'Boy meets boy, boy loses boy, but boy gets boy in the end'
The whole of 'It's a Boy's Life' from 'Boy Meets Boy'
Anything MeatLoaf has ever sung I'm crazy about.
And just check the icon for my favourite Queen song.
=^_^=
TheRoaroftheGreasepaint
PS- ''Where would you be?'
'I'd be up a tree'
'And what would you do?'
'I'd throw things at you!''

These two kinda speak to me the most;
"the heart shuts itself
still now crumbling apart
days I screamed,
holding back the tears
the heart left me the strength to believe there's a reason
it was my very own heart that killed me"
-mushi- (translated from the Japanese) by Dir en grey
"Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage
And someone will say what is lost can't ever be saved"
Bullet with Butterfly Wings by Smashing Pumpkins
