I have decided to start writing my thesis over why people sing or whistle with songs, and the psychological aspect of that. One of my close friends brought up the point of, what purpose will the paper serve? A question that I do not have an answer (yet) to. Any ideas as to what could be gained from this topic, besides knowledge, for its own sake?

It would tell something about the meeting with the world of human at a base (their metaphysical understanding), but it will also tell much about culture and language. The purpose may so be to understand humans better which is important in all kind of work toward humans.
