I listen to pop music when I'm alone, but I'm afraid to share my music tastes because most people in my social sphere disapprove.

Yes, I listen to Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and the like. I tried exploring different genres. I like some upbeat classical music, too, but it takes a lot of focus to listen to because it's really intricate (and with a busy schedule, I rarely have time to be able to do this). Pop music is simple and repetitive, making for good background music. Also, I enjoy the energy that pop music has. I don't know. It's addictive and I can't explain it. I just want to listen to more and more of it. It really matches my mood, which is usually hyper and energetic aside from when I'm depressed.

But people keep telling me that I should listen to stuff that's either too depressing, does not have enough beat, or is not repetitive enough. So I keep my mouth shut about my music preferences. I don't know what to do about this, though. It's so constricting, especially when everyone in a room is talking about music and I have nothing to say because I'm afraid to share.

It's not wrong. You're allowed to like what you like. Telling others what they should and should not like-- THAT is wrong.

There's nothing wrong with listening to pop music, majority of people (Well, females at least) listen to it.

In office environments its common for a radio to be playing a station that plays pop music.

I know... I am sick of people judging each other over books that they read, music that they listen to, or a tv show/movie they watch! It's just stupid!

There is nothing wrong with liking pop music. Liking pop music (particlurarly mainstream) is good, because It is a sign that you are integrating to mainstream society.

I don't care for today's pop music but I don't want to come off as a snob or intentionally make anyone feel ashamed for listening to what they enjoy. People should be free to like whatever they want. It seems that people who like different kinds of music get different things out of it.

I'll take the side to say why it is wrong to like pop music.

No pop song I have ever heard goes outside of 4/4 time signature. That is something a toddler can play on their first instrument, especially with as repetitive and simple as most pop is.

Another issue with pop music is that it never truly dwells into any big philosophical issues. It is just shallow songs about dancing, partying, sex, and doing drugs. All the unsavory elements of our culture there, no?

Then there's the fact that these pop artists don't even write their own songs. They are essentially record company slaves meant to just sell a lot of records singing what a person making the abre minimum to survive wrote.

The scourge that is autotune can't be ignored either. If you can't sing without digital modification, just don't f*****g sing. Simple.

I will give the singers this: some of them have a fantastic range like Beyonce and Amy Lee of Evanescence. Some underground pop I can see the appeal of, but mainstream pop is trash.

I like pop music and I don't care what people think of me. I actually like a lot of different genres. There's nothing to be ashamed of. It's okay to not like a specific genre but there's nothing more annoying when people complain about it just because they only like "underground" stuff or just one genre of music. I look at music as more of an art, and I'm definitely more of a music person than a lyrics person.

pop music is one the things i despise the most. i hate it with a true hate.

However, if you have made a conscious decision to listen to it then you have every right to enjoy it. the reason i say this is because most people will listen to pop and put everyone down who listens to anything else and yet those people have never ever tried any other music. They just listen to it because the TV tells them to.

The thing that springs to my mind is teenager or preteen. There's not a lot of teenagers that will listen to anything other than pop. There are a few but not many. My parents exposed me to lots of different music when I was little. I can appreciate almost any type of music essentially.

im glad you said that as this is what i teach to my daughter. i bring her up with alterantive musics such as punk, metal and soundtracks which have various styles of music. she will have pop forced upon her at every opportunity elsewhere.

@Mathgirl:
I am the same as you. I much prefer listening to the Lady Gaga sort of music over anything else, and I do not advertise this fact in social situations because I know it is not the type of music that people generally approve of.

But sometimes there are pieces of music from other genres that I do like. I usually come across them on internet forums such as this, or by listening to the radio. Don't force yourself to try to like music from other genres, I don't think that will ever work. But if you do find a more unusual piece of music that you genuinely like, then that can be a good thing to talk about in social situations.

Also, when people are talking about music and I feel left out, I find it helpful to ask them questions about their musical tastes - what does it sound like?, why do you like it?, do the band have a CD out I can buy? etc. That usually tends to be enough to keep the conversation going

This is good because it is a sign that you are integrating, I have worked for 4 years to make my self a new identity In which i expanded some of my musical tastes to be in line with the mainstream culture All people with autism should like some mainstream music and stop isolatingyourselves in ghetto. I am not saying to stop liking non mainstream music, but what I am saying is that you have to like some mainstream music, but you can still love non mainstream music. Mainstream and Non Mainstream music can coexist with each other.
