An interesting blog declaring nothing but praise and respect for metal. Take your time to read it, it's pretty much on the money.

A lot of Metal I never liked, but I like some of it. Sometimes the melody and sound is capturing and sometimes the words, but I would not say it is always the words. I mean sometimes I listen to a song and I have little to no clue what they mean by the songs lyrics. HEH.

I listen mainly to metal, and while I love the genre I cannot say it's any deeper or more meaningful than any other. I think it's a rather narrow view of music in general when someone declares their brand of music more meaningful than all the rest.

I just don't like the way it sounds.

I like loads of different genres, but metal isn't one of them. I don't really like much metal. A few songs are okay, though, but I don't think much of a lot of it.

I got into music by metal, I still listen to a lot of metal nowadays despite my taste being very diverse. I think the problem is everyone tends to listen to a band with screamo then go "OMG ITS JUST SCREAMING AND I HATE METAL COZ OF THAT."

A bit of a simplification/hasty generalisation of the bands that play metal. Negativity, pessimism and denial of life are some of the common sentiments within the genre lyrically, moreso than, say, pop music. Compare "life is over" to "baby's gone, oh well there'll be another". The author projects their own personality unto the entire genre, perhaps even artists that don't identify as matching the blogger's own views.

I was listening until about midway through because I do appreciate content that tries to talk about subjects that aren't easy to talk about, but the writer's attitude is making me a bit nauseous.

Since we're on the topic of ignorance with this blog post, I'd like to comment on the writer's hangup on being an individual. It's typically the unenlightened and not the enlightened who believe not only that they're immune to the shortcomings of experiencing the world through an innately flawed human body and human brain, but that they're so much more intelligent and individual than those surrounding them. After all, if you don't have the patience to draw those traits in others to the surface or the know-how to spot it, then it obviously doesn't exist in them and cannot be stoked into existence, right? Buncha sheep, yech.

I don't even know why I don't like metal. I like punk, if that explains anything.

Its got nothing to do with what they're saying or the culture of it. Its got to do with the fact that a) the "singing" in metal is basically just someone screaming at the top of their lungs, which does not require talent and is not pleasant to listen to and b) musically, its uninteresting - there's some talented musicians but nothing but guitar and bass riffs + drums is just boring, especially when the target sound is meant to be more noise than melody.

Everything in this post is an incorrect generalization.

Neurosis, Anathema, Katatonia, and Ayreon are just a few examples of bands that have at one point or another defied all of these tropes.

Most screamo baloney gets lumped with metal, that's why said criticism you listed happens.

I have never loved a genre more!
It's usually of higher quality than pop music and whatnot.
The music and lyrics usually have more thought behind them and it's certainly deeper than Justin Bieber or Nick Minaj and other shizzle.
People I know who don't listen to metal say "ohmygod you listen to death metal! But it's telling you to kill yourself! And all the screaming!"
Well death metal doesn't make you want to kill yourself :/ There are actually songs that are anti-suicide.
And I understand some people may be put off by the screaming, but not all metal has screaming in it :/

And what 'metal' is it you listen to?

The majority of metal does not have screaming vocals some kinds of extreme metal do like thrash metal, black metal, death metal and any subgenres in those categories. Also for the band that do uave the screaming vocals they are not screaming at the top of their lungs as that would make the vocals to straining and destroy their voice...it actually is very particular and does take talent to get the screaming/harsh/screeching type vocals you hear in some kinds of metal.

There are a lot of bands the media mistakes for metal in which the vocalists just scream at the top of their lungs, a lot of those bands go through quite a few vocalists because they aren't doing it right and destroy their vocals, and yes there are some metal bands that just straight up suck.

Musically unintresting is an opinion, some people don't find it musically intresting some people do...that is all a matter of perspective. Also I don't know where you get that the target sound of metal is more noise than melody. Perhaps there is more rhythm at times but if a metal band sounded like just noise to me I wouldn't like them. Not saying you have to like it but none of what you've said about it is true.
