I can't find a specific book thread anywhere and this comes close to it so....
Has anyone read any of his books and if so, did you like them?
I am a pretty big fan of his books although I've only read 4 of his books so far (one from each of his series).
My favourite is Shades of Grey, which is about people who can only see one colour but there is much more to it then that as they are all dictated by "The Rules" where your colour says everything about how you live, who you'll talk to and who you can breed with.
I really love that book, it's a shame the next one is a whole year away whilst the main series (Thursday Next) keeps having new books.
I do like Thursday Next from what I read, but I felt that it wasn't up there with SoG.
Thursday Next has a spin off called The Nursary Crime (Diaries?), which is also a great book to read if you like your Crime Novels mixed with Fiction.
The Last Dragonslayer gets going near the end of the book, which is strange as it's aimed at children moreso then Adults.
I like his books mainly for double meanings and how inventive the worlds are in the books (they are based around British Cities with a unique twist in them) and the (main) characters are always charming and feel real in how they live.
He even has an event based in Swindon (where Thursday Next is apparently from) called the Fforde Feista!
Anyway, I hope this doesn't put people off if you are interested in trying one of his books.

Yeah I got into his books a few years back. I was pretty much won over by the title of the first Jack Spratt book (the nursery crime series) 'The Big Over Easy'. I've read one of the Thursday Next series, but sometimes struggle with all the literary twist and the names make it a bit awkward for me to read. I really did like Shades of Gray. It's a interesting tale and must take a lot of skill to create a world where colour is a commodity. I heard the next in the series is going to be a prequal, which I'm quite excited about.

Glad you enjoyed the books! I liked The Big Over Easy myself with the twist at the end.
I think the next SoG book is indeed a sequel, as the ending pretty much told you what's going to happen to Ed and Jane.
I would recommend The Last Dragonslayer as it's pretty light on pages compared to the other books.

Yes yes yes! One of my favourite authors. I have read all of them and have to say my favourites are the early Thursday Next ones, probably because I read them first. I just love his use of language, the fantastic cross-references and jokes and really original plots and ideas (as far as I'm concerned anyway!). They are one of the few books I can read over again because you get more out of them every time.
Or maybe because he's wacky and I'm wacky or something...
