Michael Crawford of the ones I've seen. Gerard Butler is poor in the first few songs of the movie but improves later on - but he is pretty handsome which seems to not match what the character is supposed to be like.

Also, didn't Robert Guillaume (best known for playing Benson on TV) take a turn on the original production after Michael Crawford left? I'm pretty sure that when I saw the original production in LA he played the Phantom, but he's not in your poll.

Personally I prefer Gerard Butler. I am a huge Phantom lover, and have heard all of the others at least once. I played around with the musical score in my vocal lessons before hearing any of the different Phantoms, and I prefer his voice; it just fits the mysterious nature of the Phantom.

gerard was a terrible phantom. the phantom is supposed to be a hideously disfigured man with a voice that sounds like angels. he is much too attractive to be playing the part. the disfigurement wasn't hideous at all. it just looked like a rash. the makeup for it was absolutely horrible. also, his voice sounds TERRIBLE!! !! ! he is not a good singer AT ALL!! !! !! !

Yes, Robert Guillaume did. Oh man, that was almost 20 years ago when I saw that in L.A. I didn't think he was very good.

I have only heard Michael Crawford on the soundtrack, but would have liked to have seen him live. I voted for Michael.

And for the sexiness/ickiness factor combined, Gerard Butler! I can't help but imagine the Phantom as being somehow attractive, despite the Lon Chaney version being more faithful to how Gaston Leroux described him as opposed to handsome Gerard.

Didn't Charles Dance play the Phantom, too, for a made-for-tv movie?

if the phantom is physically attractive, why hide in a cave underneath the opera house? the phantom in the movie just makes no sense

Oh well, I'll narrow it down to my top 3 favorite Phantoms:

1) Paul Stanley (Well, I placed him here 'cos I'm a major KISS fan)
2) Ramin Karimloo
3) John Cuida (The Phantom that I saw 3 years ago on Broadway)
