Any fellow musicians out there?
Describe yourself.
1. What instrument do you play?
2. Do you write your own music or play other musician's works?
3. Have you recorded using FL Studios, Cubase, Garageband, or other music programs?
4. How long have you been playing?
5. Do you know music theory at all?
6. What kind of music genres do you play?
I'll start-
1. I play piano, guitar, and bass guitar.
2. I do both, but mostly write my own.
3. I have recorded with Cubase, Garageband, Audacity, and Finale, but I want to try FL Studios.
4. I've been playing piano and guitar for 6 or 7 years, but piano is my main instrument.
5. I study music theory and write my own songs using it.
6. I play rock, alternative rock, and acoustic rock too.
I'm the guitarist in this band.

My main instrument is fiddle. I play it it in an old time, Round-Peak influenced style. I listen to much Round-Peak type music, mostly Brad Leftwich. I also listen to a lot of alternative/indie/punk rock stuff too, like Guided by Voices.
I play clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar too, sometimes. Also ukulele and electric guitar occassionally. But I have decided to make fiddle my main instrument and get as good as I can at it. I think it sounds the most beautiful. And I seem to take to it pretty naturally.
P.S. I dig your band Red Robin...
1.My main instrument is the bass guitar, but I also play guitar occasionally- It was the low to mid end (high end for when I play Motorhead) rhythmic tone that is one of the many that reasons persuaded me to play the bass.
2. Both. I play work by other bands/musicians, but recently started to write my own material within the last year. There are times when songwriting can be the most reflective and creative moment in the world.
3. I've recorded using audacity and Logic- However, Logic was on the computer of a music workshop for AS/ASD students which the school dispatched me to, and I was only allowed limited access (I recorded my instrument, but was only allowed to press start and stop). So, I would like to try Logic a lot more.
4. I've been playing bass and guitar for almost two years.
5. At school, In music class I was taught very basic music theory (which was often disrupted by unruly members of the class), so I decided to learn the advanced theory in my own time, by reading dozens of books and websites.
6. Metal is my main area of interest (as it is a very diverse genre) , but I also like to play rock , punk and some funk.
i sing and rap, as well as write my own lyrics...so if you need a lyricist/emcee/voice, i'm your guy =)

Wow! You guys do it all!
I'm not quite there yet, but hopefully someday I'll be a little farther down the musical road.
1. What instrument? Guitar, hands down! I also sing, but I could be better.
2. Write my own music? I wish. I would love to write music, but whenever I write some lyrics down, I usually throw them away soon after. Everything I write never sounds good enough (which is kinda a theme in itself: my lack of self-confidence)
3. Have you recorded using ... anything? No. Personally, I hate editing. I'd rather be performing. I'm thinking of investing a little in Maschine (by Native Instruments). I donno, seeing Jeremy Ellis perform makes it look like the coolest thing in the world.
4. How long have you been playing? Not very long, but I know plenty of chords and that seems to get me by. If I don't know something, I ask or look it up.
5. Do you know music theory at all? No. I can only read TAB for guitar and I sing by memory.
6. What kind of music genres do you play? I love Pop and Rock, so stuff by Matchbox 20, Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, MIKA, Taylor Swift, etc.
And I am amazed at all the new things I can play just because I have a capo now.

I've played guitar for years and still love it. On the accoustic I play a lot of classical finger picking and for fun Bob Dylan and White Stripes songs. On the electric I normally mess around with a chorus and overdrive combo. I've been learning the piano for a while, but it's hard to re-capture the passion I had for learning the guitar when I was a teenager. I used to play with friends that are now long gone, so it can be quite a lonely pursuit at times. I've written a lot of stuff by accident which I keep going back to, but I've still never gotten round to recording it.
Does this make me a musician? Where do you draw the line?

Kris, there isn't really a line like you're thinking. I'd say you are, because you play an instrument, simple as that. You may not be a songwriter or a producer or an engineer (recording engineer), but you're definitely a musician. You may become those other things later, but focus on what you can do for now.
Keep jamming, my friend.

1. I play Guitar, bass, piano/ synths, trumpet somewhat and am learning the cello.
2. I do both, but mostly write my own. (I will +1 this)
3. I have used garageband... and thats about it
4. Ive only been playing for about 1.5-2 years across everything
5. I love studying theory, even though I have not been in a single music class since 4th grade
6. I like doing crossovers of electronica and metal with heavy classical/ethnic influences

I play mainly guitar but I also mess around with banjo, violin, omnichord, percussion (drum pad or anything I can bang on that makes an interesting sound), electric organ and keyboard.
Mostly play my own "creations", but its fun to jam other peoples music, especially around the bon fire.
I record on a Tascam 4 track. Its getting harder to find blank cassette tapes though.
I've been playing (making noise) for as long as I can remember.
I have no interest in music theory and that keeps things interesting.
I dont limit myself to any certain genre. I guess its mostly industrial, noise, ambient. With a little post punk and goth thrown in there.
edit: wow, i obviously didn't read the instructions the first time i posted, lol:
1. voice, piano/keyboards.
2. i wrote a few songs when i was in my early teens, but these days i stick to works by those more creative than myself.
3. i have *attempted* audacity, but i'm pathetic when it comes to that kind of thing.
4. began playing piano by ear at age four (it's definitely genetic, as two out of three of my siblings can also play by ear, as well as my son, and the vast majority of relatives on my mother's side; including my grandmother, who was a professional pianist at local clubs...but the really strange thing is, my mom can't play by ear at all -- in fact, she's completely tone deaf, lol). i started doing vocal solos at school at age nine, regional competitions at age 12, and joined my first band in college, at age 16 (i graduated early, because i hated school!).
5. despite several lessons over the years, there is absolutely NO HOPE for me in this area.
6. genres: mainly alt rock, alt pop, and r&b...as well as classical on piano.

My current instrument: Voice. Formerly played clarinet and bass clarinet.
Compositions: By others.
Recording software: Haven't used.
Played since: 2006.
Music theory background: Yes.
Genres: Hymns, Negro spirituals, Christian contemporary (for now).
I play ukulele, piano, guitar, and I sing. I've also fiddled around with psaltry and recorder.
I mostly play covers, but I've written here and there. I'm good with poetry, but I have a hard time writing music to it. I recently started learning more about composing, so I hope I can apply that.
I've tried recording with ProTools, but I have very, very little experience. Plus, it kind of blew up on me, and I'm reluctant to start messing with it again.
I started piano lessons twelve years ago, but gave up pretty quickly. I didn't start considering myself a musician until seven years ago, when I started teaching myself guitar and piano again.
I have studied music theory, but I started it very late in life. I took theory I and II in college, plus ear training. It's made a HUGE difference in my understanding of music. I HIGHLY recommend getting a background in theory for anyone who's interested in any aspect of music.
I play mostly pop, alternative and folk. But I like to try different things, like rock, hip hop, classic rock, and so forth. I also sing opera, which makes me happy.

6. What kind of music genres do you play?
1. I play Guitar and Piano.
2. I attempt to write my own music in the Western Art Music tradition.
3. I've used Logic Pro and Cubase for college courses and such but I prefer good old fashioned pencil and manuscript for getting ideas down.
4. Probably about seven or eight years.
5. Attempting to write 'classical' music, knowledge of voice-leading, counterpoint, harmony and form comes with the territory. I'm always trying to develop my craft though. I've read the Piston texts on Harmony, Counterpoint and Orchestration, Schoenberg on Harmony and Form and Jeppesen on 16th century counterpoint.
6. As above, I mostly write music which could be described variously as 'classical', 'concert' or 'art' music. It's only in the past year or so that I've taken up writing in this style, most of my pieces so far have been solo piano miniatures - Prelude's, Minuet's, Waltz's, Scherzo's - I'm working on building up my level of craft before I attempt to take on larger forms and larger instrumental forces. My main inspirations are Beethoven, Mahler and Schoenberg.

1. What instrument do you play?
Piano and voice.
2. Do you write your own music or play other musician's works?
I write my own. I only rarely learn someone else's music, I have to really like a song to be bothered with learning to play it. Singing is a different story though, I don't know how many songs I've memorized in that regard but it's not a small number.
3. Have you recorded using FL Studios, Cubase, Garageband, or other music programs?
No.
4. How long have you been playing?
Since childhood.
5. Do you know music theory at all?
Yes, quite a lot of it.
6. What kind of music genres do you play?
I don't know if what I play can really be classified as anything. I just do my own thing, as it were.
