1996's Lovelife albim went away from shoegaze and was a reaction to the "laddish" Britpop. And wouldn't you know this would be their biggest hit.

I am familiar with them through an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, in which their cover of 'Wild Horses' was played.
I immediately looked it up and burned the song onto one of my mix-CDs, because of the ethereal quality to that cover version.

I heard of The Sundays. My favorite songs are Here's Where The Story Ends, Summertime, and My Finest Hour.

above is my first attempt at a youtube link, hope it works.
band is Uh Huh Her, love them. fans of the show "The L Word" will recognize this band.

For some hard rock a band called Trepid is worth looking up. (singer is a old dear friend of mine too and theyre still touring)
some 80's hair metal, Vixen and Lita Ford
Joan Jett, and lets not forget the royal godmother of rockin' women: Suzy Quatro

more blues than rock but IMHO Janis Joplin has to be mentioned here.

The Birthday Massacre has a female vocalist. They are my favorite band ever! I'm listening to their album "Nothing and Nowhere" right now!

I'm really into a band called The Donnas. All of their members are female.

I love Paramore. Their newest song, "Still Into You," rocks.
