I am a big fan of women's music now. It embodies empowerment and independence. So, I need your biggest opinion of the genre. Tell me about your favorite song or your favorite female artist.

For example, my favorite artists are Ani DiFranco, Annie Lennox, Shirley Manson, CeCe Winans, and the list goes on.

If nobody is a fan, just let me know.

I listen to some artists that would fit with the theme, but can there be a better label than "women's music"? It's restrictive, and Lilith Fair has been retired.

It seems to me that defining a musical genre in terms that restrict it to only one gender is an act of sexisim, which is bigotry.

True. I tried to think of what "men's music" might sound like, and it wasn't flattering.

I'm guessing that the OP's first language isn't English, which could explain the strange title. It could be that the OP is simply referring to singers who are women.

Hm, I think some of it sounds quite good, but to each their own ;).

And now on to the ladies, since that's what the thread was about:

I know that neither of these is probably what the OP was thinking of, but I couldn't resist!

If you like CeCe Winans...I have one in the same genre to share that is great! Check out Jaci Velesquez (best versions are music video ones on Youtube, even though there is only a couple on there.) I like to crank her music up real loud to feel the real power in her voice.

One of the greatest bands of the 90s is a female band from the riot grrl movement, Sleater-Kinney.

I went through a Fiona Apple phase, then a Tori Amos phase, then a Sarah McLaughlin phase. I also went through a Pretenders phase but I don't know if that counts.

I'm not familiar the genre called Women's Music but I do like some feminist music. Espcially Jill Sobule

I think there was never a female musician as good as Montserrat Figueras. Her voice is perfect. Her interpretations are perfect.

Are you thinking of western music because, I concur, but I've found a lot of eastern music... specifically soundtrack stuff from anime that's like rediculously cheesy but would totally fit an idealized version of masculinity that verges on comedic.

Based on the list the OP gave I THINK she is talking about musicians who present as strong and independent.

Kate Bush IMHO is the best vocalist of all time. Not only did she have a 4 Octave Range but was able switch back and forth in ways that has never been done since. She added elements of mime and Broadway dance and classical literature that had never been done in pop music. She was also inventor in video music. She showed off these talents in her debut single

Speaking of empowerment her record company did not want this to be her debut single. She fought and won. To have an artist never mind a female on choose there debut single was unheard of. This was especially true especially for females

Today's "stars" could take a few lessons from Kate Bush on how to write a sexual song that is hot but classy.

Bush is one of the most intelligent people in pop music and has written songs about a number of topics that were not usual pop music fare in that era. She is also very versatile stylistically. There is no Kate Bush style. Sat In Your Lap railed against people who want to take the easy way out when trying to learn.

Her 1989 song "Deeper Understanding" is believed to be the first song written about internet addiction. In 1989 most people did not even know about the internet. In 2011 she reworked the song and directed this video.

Bush can have a sly sense of humor. Check out at 2:18

Any tribute like this for Kate Bush is wholly inadequate but if it gets people to discover her it is worth it.

Does women's music have to be by a woman?

That's interesting. I think it might sound like this:
