Me.
Around 1990 I was listening to the local college radio station and heard a public service announcement for something. In the background was a weird song, fast with lots of guitar and a funny sounding singer saying Viva Las Vegas over and over. I called in to the station and asked what it was. They said oh that was the Dead Kennedy's. I asked what record that was from, hung up and went straight to the local record store to buy Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables.
I learned that this music was callled "punk" and went to the UGA library to start researching. I read every book they had on punk rock and bought a few they didn't. The even had a media center were you could watch movies with headphones.. I watched Suburbia countless times there.
So I got into DK, X, the uk Subhumans, the Ramones, Wasted Youth, Black Flag, and most of the last 70s early 80s west coast bands. I met a guy who was hanging out in downtown Athens and he asked if I played anything. I said I was learning to play guitar so he invited me to start up a band. I was a terrible player and had old, junky gear. We went on to play a bunch of shows and I suppose are kind of well known 20 years later in the Athens scene.
Still like punk today.. I'm not as into the scene as I used to be, no longer have mohawks or dyed hair because of the job.
Even though I didn't fit in with punks (aspergers) I kind of liked them more than any other group or subculture.. they seemed more open to accepting weirdos than say the goths, or mods, or whoever.
