I took a look. Interesting stuff. I find the psychology of architecture interesting too. You made a good comparison between the effects of McDonald's architecture (or any fast food architecture, really) and the architecture of a church.

I think some architects are oblivious to the psychological effects of the space they design, or they just don't care. To some architects the people who use a space seem so secondary that they are almost not worth consideration and the only consideration is the coolness of the design. Bauhaus architects I'm looking at you.

The people who really, truly understand the influence of architecture on psychology are movie set designers. They know just exactly how a space should look to influence a certain frame of mind.

Ah, I am glad you found it interesting. Yeah, the architecture of fast food restaurants is absolutely fascinating I find. The architecture of McDonalds has altered in the last ten years but it is interesting to not how the idea of instant gratification that pervades the food also pervades the architecture in which it is cooked. It is all designed to be as fast as possible. The food is unnatural in its color and so is the architecture.

Yes, most definitely. It seems that the dehumanizing effects of architecture in cities has been well thought out to correspond with the other dehumanizing aspects of modern life. So true, the style is so important to architects that they forget the effect it has on the people inside. Very good observation there.

Yes, you are right, movie set designers are very clever and realize very well how architecture is entwined into class, nationality race and other aspects of identity. They known how space can allow us to make judgements about characters more easily and how the structure of the space in the film can alter and manipulate our emotions especially if it accompanied by music.

Just looked up Bauhaus architecture since I did not know what it was. Uggh how ugly! I do not understand how someone could think that was practical in anyway!

Nice blog you have there. You raise an interesting point about how modern architecture has a more utilitarian and less decorative aesthetic than that of the past. I'd argue this is partly due to our fast-paced modern epoch. We go for the simplest aesthetic because it takes the least time to produce in our busy modern lives.
