> RS Audio Illumé interconnects
> Corda HA-1 MK-II Headphone Amp (hand made in Germany )
> Sennheiser HD600 w/ HD650 Cable (I built a headphone cable from Canare Starquad mic cable but it was too bassy and kept on breaking on me)
This headphone system sounds better than speaker systems that cost many times more.
Speaker System:
Sources:
-Firewire Audiophile RCA out 3/4
-Sony SACD/DVD/CD player (still at home, needs to get mailed soon)
Amp:
-NAD C350 (it's 60 watts a channel integrated amp would put many more powerful amps to shame. I can blow the windows out of my room at 50% power).
Speaker Cable:
-Kimber 4VS
Speakers:
-JVC SK-S44 They are pretty old but I inherited them from the family so the price is right and they sound damn good!
I have scrimped and saved for each of these components over the last 5 or 6 years or so and it has been COMPLETELY worth it. Nothing makes me happier than great sound. I'm sure I'm not the only aspie with this obsession so whip em out!

.....mine is a twenty dollar record player in cabinet I got second hand.... it has an 8 track player and I attached speakers I had lying around to it, it has better sound quality than my 10hz-19khz headphones, which really are pretty good <I need to get better ones eventually nonetheless>

"The bedroom set," because it's the best sounding:
- Pioneer SX-838 receiver, circa 1974. 2 phono inputs, 3 speaker pairs (you can drive 2 at a time), 50 REAL watts per channel and glorious blue dial lighting. The picture doesn't do it justice, and I was too lazy to upload one of my own:
- Pioneer PL-518 direct-drive turntable, circa 1978. Best $15 I've spent. This thing's amazing.
- TEAC A-3300S reel to reel, circa 1976 (pic shows a more recent version)
- ADS L-570/2 speakers, mid-'80s vintage (pic shamelessly copped from eBay). 8" woofs, 1" tweets, and the most incredible imaging.
And a '90s model Yamaha dual cassette deck, perfectly decent, that I picked up for free.
@ZedSimon, that is a sweet looking system!
I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with audio gear from the 70s and 80s. I have a pair of 30 year old Electrovoice Sentury IV-B loudspeaker that were given to me. I fussed a bit with the wiring and got them working perfectly. I used them for DJing in high school. With just 100watts, they could blow the roof off a gym. Each one has two horn loaded 12" woofers that put out the loudest and most tuneful base I've heard from a pro speaker. Now that is what I call efficiency! When I have a room big enough to hold them, I'll get them out of storage and hopefully hook em up to a little SET tube amp. I could probably go as loud as I would ever want to on 10 watts. Only problem is that they are UGLY and the cases of mine are in about as bad condition as the ones in the picture (stolen from eBay).

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I kinda like the look of those EVs.
Thinking: one day I want to get my Pioneer CT-F7171 out of the sickbay. Got it for $2 at a thrift in great shape, except for the belts and some electronic problem where the left channel pulses. Odd "diagonal load" design where you load the tape in on an angle. It's a perfect match for the 838, and made only a couple months later. Yummy:
I don't listen to music much in the house. My main audio system is in the car - http://www.cardomain.com/ride/636215
Sweet! A stereo thread. Not sure how I missed this. Y'all have some great vintage stuff! I'm a huge sound geek. Hifi and home theater have been an obsession of mine for many years.
Here's my current main music / theater system:
Sources:
- iPod via Dock (I plan on upgrading this to a wireless link to iTunes on my computer using Apple Airport Express, Roku Soundbrige or something similar)
- JVC DVD/CD player (will soon be upgraded to an upconverting DVD player with HDMI output)
- Scientific Atlanta digital cable box and DVR- I don't use my TV's internal speakers at all.
- Marantz TT140 turntable - early 80's vintage, had it for years
Amp:
-NAD T761 - fantastic amp! 80 Watts per channel into 5 channels, Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, good radio tuner, more inputs and outputs than I could ever use
Speakers:
Main left/right- PSB Image 5t, towers with two 6 1/2 woof and a 1" dome tweet
Center- PSB Image 9c- also two 6 1/2 woof and a 1" dome tweet
Subwoofer- PSB SubSeries 6 - single 12" woof and builtin 300 watt amp
Surrounds- Advent Babys - 4"woofs and cone tweeters - were main speakers in my old stereo. Bought them new in the late 1980s.
It's total overkill for my living room and I love it! Here are some pics I posted on another thread- http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... highlight=
I have a second music-only system in my bedroom-
Marantz SR225 receiver - Early 80s vintage, was the amp for my main stereo for many years.
JVC dual-well cassette deck (will probably get rid of it one of these days, haven't listened to a tape in forever)
JVC CD player - old one, plays audio CDs only
iPod via Dock
Speakers- pair of "The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker" 70's vintage
I also have a Altec Lansing im7 iPod boombox that normally lives in the garage. I listen to it when I work on stuff out there or in the yard. It also goes with me on camping trips and football tailgates. Amazingly great sound from such a little box.

I like!!
I used to have a pair of Altec Voice of the Theater speakers that were very similar. Early 70s vintage, huge, and incredibly efficient. The little 25wpc amp I had at the time drove them loud enough to rattle the windows!!
I think speakers in those days were a lot more purposefully designed for efficiency (hence the huge cabinets) than today because amplifiers were a lot smaller (and relatively more expensive) then. Wood was cheaper than watts. Amps are much more powerful now so it isn't as necessary to squeeze every last bit of efficiency out of the speakers. And few people other than us geeks want huge speakers dominating their living rooms.
