I was just wondering if there are any composers here on WP.

I pretty much compose all the time nowadays. I gave up playing the piano regularly to do so as I find composing music
much more enjoyable than playing someone else's piece.

So anyway back on topic, tell us what you're working on and perhaps share you works here.

Bye

Yeah, I'm an amateur composer. I compose for wind band, but it's really slow going for me because I got all my music instruction learning to play trumpet and clarinet in the public school system (I've only taken one theory class, at university).

I'm working on a piece called Walk of The Corpses. I'm linking to a .wav file that I exported from my composition software (MuseScore for Linux). It still needs a LOT of work. There are almost no percussion parts because I know almost nothing about percussion. Also, there's about a 25 second gap somewhere around 2 min., 55 seconds where I haven't yet filled in the rest of the movement.

I have Finale and I know I'm "supposed" to use that, but I use Cubase most of the time. Sometimes my approach is to play the parts out in Cubase then go in and fix it, as opposed to scoring it in Finale which is more tedious. I use Miroslav Philharmonik because it doesn't allow you to score outside of an instrument's range. That comes in handy since I don't know all the ranges of the instrument families. The enclosed piece was composed years ago when I was first starting out.

Really, I'm finding that the trend is leading away from notation programs rather than towards it. I personally use Finale because the odds of me writing something large-scale are lower for me, but I know of other colleagues who have a sound I can only dream of, yet don't even touch a notation program during its creation. Different processes for everyone, really.

I use Sibelius 7 but I used to use FL Studio a lot until I overcame my phobia of notation software. Personally I think notation software or musical notation in general is a lot better than these sequencing softwares (whatever they're called) because you get a lot more freedom with dynamics and timing.

Freedom of dynamics, sure. Freedom of timing, not so much, at least with Finale. I've tried on numerous occasions to write piano cadenzas a-la Chopin only to have Finale be so time-signature rigid it either refuses to play it or won't until I insert every last "proper" note value :? is the one thing I feel Sibelius has over Finale (and I'm an ardent Finale user).

I see what you mean. I've personally never had these problems, with Sibelius anyway.

I am a pretty good composer...love using progressive structure but staying in 4/4 and 4/6 time signature. Always very bass driven but not neglectful of the other parts.

I've always composed music in my head whilst on walks and with my knowledge of musical form can shape my music to the rules (sonata form, rondo form etc.) The time signatures I most commonly use would be 4/4, 3/4, 3/8, 2/2 and 6/8.

I have a great respect for anyone with this gift. I have this block when it comes to music (when not played by ear - but the tech side), always have had. It's frustrating.
