Hansel and Gretel, Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, etc. There's been quite a few recently, and I'm kind of fascinated by them even if they aren't always what I hoped for. It's a slightly more "adult" fantasy while still being a little whimsical, and they expand on stories I enjoyed as a child.

I wanted to see Maleficent this weekend, but had no one to go with and will have to wait until later this week or next weekend. Opinions on this type of film?

EDIT: I don't know how this got in this section. If a mod could move it to Television and Movies, I'd appreciate it. :P

I don't mind the dark reboots. After all, the Grimm fairy tales themselves really are dark and grim.

Maleficent looks quite interesting.

I'd like to see more adult fantasy films; by adult I mean sophisticated, not necessarily filled with sex and violence. I think I've pretty much had enough of the Disney formula for a while; I thought "Frozen was pretty "meh".

Anyone seen Neil Jordan's "Company of Wolves", which I think was based on some of Angela Carter's revised fairy tales? "Dreamchild" was an adult take on Lewis Carrol's Wonderland and the real life Alice written by Dennis Potter. I must try and track down a copy of that.

Ugh. I'm getting really sick of them. There's too many of them now and not very original or compelling.

The genre is getting over saturated the way comic book heroes are.

The Squid remains unconvinced. While older stories need to be re-told from time to time, it seems it's the only way to sell blockbusters now. Are there no more writers in Hollywood that have independent ideas? From Lord of the Rings, to Snow White, they are reinterpreted again and again.

We almost feel like Harry Potter was the last great modern work of fiction that was turned to film. That was a long time ago.
Everything else is either shoot-em-ups like Fast n' Furious and Machete Kills, or they are situational comedies, like Anchor man.

I loved The company Of Wolves. Surreal dream imagery of werewolf lore culminating in Little Red Riding Hood - what is there not to like?
