What is the story for? Is it for a class? Are there any guidelines?

Horror/thriller: a kid goes to their grandmother's house. She always reads the obituaries, every day. But today she seems very upset. The kid picks up the newspaper, and looks at the obituaries. They see their own name. They had been wondering why no-one seemed to notice them the last few days...?

Think about something that you feel very passionate about, that will make the best story for you. You can take any issue that you care about and set it in any world.

Time traveling rom-com between two time-agents, based in the 1980s. They don't time travel to the 80's. They time travel from the 80's to all over time.

A man is certain flesh eating larvae are devouring his body from the inside out, but he is institutionalized before he can cut himself open to get them out. The story is about how this guy tries to either escape custody, or at least reach a knife in maybe the kitchen, so he can "save himself." Is he just delusional to the point of mental illness? Or is he right?

Guy in town full of zombies has to go to the store to get supplies. Fights zombies, runs away from zombies etc. Story writes itself.

Create the characters and the setting before you create the story. Avoid Mary Sue characters, but do not be afraid to take inspiration from your own personality or your own life. You should also avoid basing stories entirely on dreams, as dreams are often subconsciously affected by the works of other people. An important thing to remember, is that stories written in the 1. person perspective (this is easier to write than the 3. person perspective) place the reader inside the story (like a video game player); movies place the viewer outside the story (like a spectator).

Originality is also nice, but don't be afraid to take inspiration from other works. Few good things out there are entirely original. If it wasn't for The Crow in 1994, Heath Ledger's the Joker would have been completely different, and if it wasn't for the Count of Monte Cristo, the Shawshank Redemption would never have been written.

You should really pick a genre that would help people respond. I like sci-fi and high fantasy and I have a couple set in the real world for action, adventure and comedy. I have way too many story ideas to ever write them all so if you'd like to publish from me go for it.

For sci-fi one idea I played with was an alien race attacks Earth the twist is that Earth is actually their homeworld from thousands of years ago before our rise and so they are only trying to return home a home that they have longed for since our world was but young.

For high fantasy there was a few hours where I really liked this prison idea. There?s this prison, a dungeon, that?s been abandoned for thousands of years. It?s in ruin, abandoned, and no one knows who build it or why no one even knows it exists. For the story?s intro this group finds it and begins to go deeper and deeper passing through ages with every step they take for this prison didn?t just exist over a period of a hundred years it was built layer by layer via a powerful race over thousands of years. So they keep going lower and lower and it?s totally abandoned but something just keeps calling them down. And eventually they begin to hear something an echo of a hundred voices singing a terribly sad song but as they get closer then realize that it is only one. The sole occupant of the prison to remain thousands of years after it?s abandonment after the race who built it fell and held to this day by magic. The first prisoner and the last. The quote I made was ?In the end, as eternal as the universe, revenge comes to all.? He is then released and the story starts.

As for the real world I do not believe I have any stories from it that I do not intend on writing so I won?t be a help there.

The latest robotic Mars probe is trundling across the surface of the red planet. It is sending back endless video footage of red-brown rocks and everyone is bored to death, even the geologists. One night, however, a massive cliff face looms into view of the camera. On the cliff face the words "Congratulations! You have already won a major prize! Ring this number now!! !" are carved in letters fifty feet high.

A press blackout is ordered and the president is summoned. With trembling hand he calls the number and hears a voicemail message which informs him that he has reached the offices of God. God is out of the office at the moment but he is very pleased to hear that mankind has developed the technology to reach another planet and is prepared to offer us a prize. We can choose from: A cure for all known diseases, an infinite, clean energy source, the secret of world peace, or... a free baseball cap for everyone in the world. we have a week to decide on which prize we want.

The president gathers together his senior advisors. "I really don't think we should go for the cure-all" says the chief from the pharmaceutical industry. "And I don't think we need the secret of world peace" says his military advisor. You can see where this is going can't you? We end up going for the baseball caps.

The story ends with God's hand reaching for a big red "reset" button as He mutters "it's always the bloody same!".

Incidentally, the more I thought about the story I tossed out to you, the more I liked it. So I have since started writing it. Wish me luck.
