Even if they can't understand it. I like Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc etc folk. Russian folk with the accordion, the melancholy feeling, and the white singing, as they sometimes call it.

Like this:

Does anyone else like folk music or any other kind of genre that is unique to a certain part of the world?

Crap loads,. what about Magma who use a made up language? Never been big into lyrics anyway so not understanding them does not bother me. In fact as I stumbled on this post I was, and still am listening to this little Italian avant-prog/folk number.

What about Welsh language folk. I can't understand a word of this but still an emotionally moving piece of music.

there's some great music coming out of sweden right now, especially folk (if you're into that)--much of it is in english, too. (is there anyone left in scandinavia who doesn't speak english these days? )

for example:

Yes. Bossa nova, Cesaria Evora, and European opera. I don't have much interest in or exposure to modern foreign music, though.

Actually the kind of folk I liked was more centered around the traditional style. A few years ago I used to listen to Garmarna, but I don't listen to them as often, they did a lot of "modern" interpretations of traditional Scandinavian songs. By modern I probably mean an improv on the melody using folk instruments.

To be honest I was more into Finland, but when it comes down to it, I've really set my sites on east asian music more and more, but I like early european music too like the cantigas de santa maria or the codex buranus

Thanks for the music, when it comes down to it I don't listen to that much Welsh folk, but I have a few songs I think when I found a giant collection on youtube and proceeded to find the songs that made it up on the internet individually... but when it comes to songs from the British Isles, I really liked this one, even though it sounds a little cheesy and reminds me vaguely of titanic in the intro (I don't like that move very much btw)

I must admit I consider the breakup of Yugoslavia a little bit of a tragedy and the Serbian wars were really messed up, but I have a guilty please, Chetnik music... ever since I heard the song for remove kebab... yea I actually liked it... so...

Yes. I don't have negative reactions to the lyrics when I can't understand the words.

This one actually has nice lyrics, though:

I don't know if I would like this song as much in English, or if it wasn't the ending theme for my favorite show.

I also like Calle 13, but I feel fairly sure that I wouldn't if I understood their lyrics. I don't listen to much folk music, but I love the movie Latcho Drom, which is all folk music of the Roma people.

I can only partially relate to this I think. Most of the foreign music I have is still in english lol, like the stuff starvingartist posted (<--actually pretty much the same bands/artists even lol), but the only exception to that would be Sigur Ros/Jonsi from Iceland. Some of his music is in english as well, but much of it is in Icelandic and I still love it because the music itself is so beautiful (and often the videos are as well). Here are a couple from them:

Being limited to one country and language is kinda boring, don't you think? I'll try anything once.

I listen to lots of foreign music. I like Swedish/Dutch techno music, and I am also a big fan of Latin music: Salsa, Tropical, Afro-Cuban etc.....
