I'm not making money off music, so I'm not very credible, but here's my two cents.

The attitude "I want to get big" isn't going to get you anywhere and if it does, you probably will never stay true to your fans or your music - which is the most important thing, I believe.

Where do you go? Use the internet. Build a website. Go into music chatrooms and communities. That's what basically got Linkin Park signed. They made a bigger fanbase over the internet than they did locally.

Get a party of 20 people together with beer or whatever your friends are into and put on a show. If they like it, they'll invite more people next time around and you can work your way up.

That's how I'd go about it. But I'm not signed, so I wouldn't take my advice above anybody else's. Just trying to help. I just hope that you'll want to create music that takes effort and creativity, rather than giving that up for money.

I'm a firm believer in that doing something different and hard-work will pay-off, eventually.

SPEC, I agree with what jmoney said. Also, unless you know someone who's really down to just tag along, you've gotta make sure your beat production is tip-top as well.

As for where to get a demo done, you could do that at your own house if you bought yourself the right gear. I don't know how much familiarity you have with all this but you'll definitely wanna look into a good multitrack recorder. Getting a digital multitrack rather than a direct tape recorder is probably a better idea. You'd also want to either buy yourself a really good synth/drum machine combo or a sampler and lots of sample cd's. Also, unless you doing all that production on the computer you'll definitely need that synth or sampler to have a good sequencer (ie. the part that records and plays back what you have so far for the sake of layering).

The hardest part of doing it at home would probably be the vocals; that's something where you probably would want to take your prerecorded beats over someone else's place where they have the $1000 microphone and the sound-dampened walls.

I good voice mic to use and one that would be the easiest to get your hands on would be the electrovoice RE-20.

If you don't feel like spending $700 to buy one for yourself, you could rent it.

Or you can get yourself a handheld Shure SM-58 for around $100. Much handier (no pun intended) than an RE-20 and pretty respectable sound. $60 can get you a decent sound editor like Magix Music Maker. Lot cheaper than studio time.

Make sure you have absolutely no talent, borrow (or better yet, steal) a load of CDs by talented people to rip-off and talk over, dress like a complete twonk, talk about "gangstas" and "bea-atches" a lot, bounce up and down like you're testing out a matress, wave your arms about like you're undergoing electro-shock treatment and somehow manage to keep a straight face while doing it..... Rap stardom will soon be yours..... Boo-yakka-sha!! !! !

If all you can do is rap, just don't try, I'll one day hear your voice and regret ever giving you any advice. I have no respect for people who can JUST rap and try to become popular. If you can also sing, incorporate that to get a larger fanbase. Rapping by it self is very annoying at times, and hardly listen-to-able. Rap-Rock is enjoyable, I suggest you get into that. Or maybe go and find country singers that like rap  , and collobarate with them. Everyone likes originality, right?

TAKFASH, Sarcastic, would you appreciate it if people were macking on your taste in music? Especially if you were into it enough to try performing it? If a rapper's worth their salt they can use their voice like a synth, effex box, and drum machine. If they're worth anything they can enrich the heck out of a beat. If they can do that well and come up with some potent hi-intellect visuals in their lyrics, it really doesn't matter as much whether its their friend who's pumping out the beats or not (you could argue the same thing for singers of rock and metalbands - plenty of them never played anything in the band). There are a lot of things in music and in life in general that take talent and don't involve playing a guitar or drums - get over it.

I know a lot of aspies are nutoriously irritated by rap (I was back in middleschool when I saw all kinds of dumb suburban white kids trying to act like thugs) but this really isn't the time ane place to be expressing that. This is a production thread, not 'do or don't you like rap'.

Dunno, but I'd certainly appreciate it more if you attempted to communicate via the English language (and got my name right)..... I assume 'mack' is a derogatory term? Anyway, what music are you on about? I thought this thread was about rap?

Sorry to sound harsh (bad/sad mood lately). Rap is OK when mixed with other things. Try to form a rap-rock band?

Just make sure you are really passionate about it, and will stop at nothing to get recognised.

As for demos, you can make it sound fairly professional from home, might be a steep learning curve and vocals might be harder. But beats and music, no problem.

And just be ready to perform for a whole load of people, try and get into gigs, get talking to other local artists and get into 'the scene'. If you have talent or are lucky in some way, you might get talent spotted. Also send off ur demos at the same time.

If you are any good then you need to make a very professional demo on CD. Nothing weak, it has to shine. It has to be more than just vocals or covers. It has to be professionally produced with a good backing track and be totally original. If you can't get to this stage then you are not good enough. No one is going to so this for you until you prove you are good enough to do it. Catch 22. The ball is in your court. If you do cut a demo CD then the people in the studio will be able to recommend the record labels who might be interested in you if your stuff is any good.

There are a lot of people who have a mini studio in their bedrooms. They hang around music forums, so you need to post on those kinda forums. Not here. Maybe you could get into a group of people and cut a demo CD that way.
