I am fairly new here so I apologize if this topic has been beat to death, but what are good songs to listen to that really describe the Asperger's experience? Two I like are both by Pink Floyd

1. Hey You
2. The Final Cut

One verse from the final cut:

"There's a kid who had a big hallucination
Making love to girls in magazines.
He wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith.
Could anybody love him
Or is it just a crazy dream?"

Pretty much describes most of my life

No apologies and I understand exactly where you are coming from. This song is my anthem so to speak and hits home with me. My friend Brian and his band Creation's Tears came up with this and it is quite good. They lyrics are quite fitting for me and my life with AS at any rate. He is not to well known on this side of the pond however I think he is more known in the UK being he is from Ireland. Easier just to give you the link as unlike Pink Floyd, not many have heard this.

There is an actual "Music" subforum I think. One of my other discussions was moved there.

If you're looking for music where the lyrics mean something to you, i don't know. My brain just loves music like Silver Mt Zion's "Mountains Made of Steam" and "What We Loved Was Not Enough" or Mice Parade's "Do your Eyes See Sparks?" but i dont really pay any attention to the meaning of the words themselves. I like the patterns.

Also, welcome.

You are quite right and will probably get moved I would imagine. Still, I do like the subject matter and this could be a popular thread. And welcome to WP ProfessorJohn!

I really do enjoy the subject as well but for some reason I never make it into the subforum for it. I don't know what i'd do without my music collection. Several years of work and countless $ later, i wouldnt trade it for the world. :)

I feel a little bad that I don't really know the words to songs to say that they describe the aspergers experience. SMZ describes my experience without words. Its a bit weird, doesn't fit with most people's idea of what music should be, but in the right situation it's just interesting, complex and perfect.

Pretty much anything by the vines, their vocalist has aspergers

Also Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode
Freak by Silverchair
Nothing to Lose by Billy Talent
I'm Just A Kid by Simple Plan

I actually know a lot of songs but can't really remember the rest

There are many long old threads on "songs that you can relate to as an aspie".

"How soon is Now?" is commonly cited (forget which band does it), as is "I am a Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel.

Didnt know that the Vines had a lead singer who was actually dxd. The only musician I was aware of who had actually been dxd is the Owl City guy. Though folks speculate that dozens of their favs (living or dead) "must be/have been aspie": ranging from Thelonius Monk, to Dylan, to countless current artists.

Eminem. The lyrics don't remind me of much of anything. The rest of it does. It's just art. Pritty sure he is like us.

I've watched the children come and go
A late long march into spring
I sit and watch those children
Jump in the tall grass
Leap the sprinkler
Walk in the ground
Bicycle clothespin spokes
The sound, the smell of swingset hands

I will try to sing a happy song
I'll try and make a happy game to play

Come play with me I whispered to my new found friend
Tell me what it's like to go outside
I've never been
Tell me what it's like to just go outside
I've never been
And I never will

And I'm not supposed to be like this
I'm not supposed to be like this
But it's okay

Hey those kids are looking at me
I told my friend myself
Those kids are looking at me
They're laughing and they're running over here
They're laughing and they're running over here

What do I do?
What can I do?
What should I do?
What do I say?
What can I say?

I said I'm not supposed to be like this
Let's try to find a happy game to play
Let's try to find a happy game to play

I'm not supposed to be like this
But it's okay, okay

I'm very surprised someone hasn't mentioned Dream Theater yet. Even from a musical perspective, they seem autistic. (In a good way. That's a compliment.) In fact, this one specific song of theirs is part a larger 42-minute-long epic composition about neurological conditions such as PTSD, bipolar, schizophrenia, and... autism spectrum disorders. As a writer myself, I related to this song's lyrics almost word for word. Although I do very much like to be held. :D
